Applications of HPLC Of the bioanalytical separation technologies described in this book, arguably HPLC has the widest range of applications, being adopted for the purpose of clinical, environmental, forensic, industrial, pharmaceutical and research analyses. While there are literally thousands of different applications, a few indicators of how HPLC has been used are as follows (i) Clinical quantification of drugs in body fluids (ii) Environmental identification of chemicals in drinking water (iii) Forensic analysis of textile dyes (iv) Industrial stability of compounds in food products (v) Pharmaceutical quality control and shelf-life of a synthetic drug product (vi) Research separation and isolation of components from natural samples from animals and plants. 

Accuracy of the obtained results is determined first of all by whether the measurements made for an analyte are vitiated by an interference effect. It is therefore of vital importance to judge well whether the sample contains components that could act as interferents with respect to the analyte. If there are any doubts in this matter, and they are not dispelled by the analyst s own experience or the proceedings of other researchers, analyses can be performed on the basis of the standard addition method (taking into account the limitations of the method). However, some additional efforts can also be made to examine the situation experimentally.

The spectra shown in Figure 6.1 require 14 excited vibrational states of the ground electronic state to be taken into account to explain all the fine structure that is seen. So the spectra have yielded information on the conditions in this region of space, the presence of dust and the composition of the interstellar gas in chemical terms.
