Reporting the cost of land can be affected by many factors, including time. An example using the land cost method, assume that the Target Corporation purchased land for 500,000 5 years ago. In those 5 years, the land appreciated to a fair market value of 1,000,000. Despite the fair market value of the land, the balance sheet would report the cost of the land at 500,000. The difference in the cost affects how analysts perceive the company s performance. The company actually has land that is more valuable than is reported.

Perovskites have the chemical formula ABO, where A is an 8- to 12-coordinated cation such as an alkaU or alkaline earth, and B is a small, octahedraHy coordinated high valence metal such as Ti, Zr, Nb, or Ta. One of the important attributes of alkyds is their good compatibiUty with a wide variety of other coating polymers. This good compatibiUty comes from the relatively low molecular weight of the alkyds, and the fact that the resin stmcture contains, on the one hand, a relatively polar and aromatic backbone, and, on the other hand, many aUphatic side chains with low polarity. An alkyd resin in a blend with another coating polymer may serve as a modifier for the other film-former, or it may be the principal film-former and the other polymer may serve as the modifier for the alkyd to enhance certain properties. Plastics can also be combined with other materials such as aluminum, steel, and wood to provide specific properties. Examples include PVC/wood window frames and plastic/ aluminum-foil packaging material. All combinations require that certain aspects of compatibility such as processing temperature and linear coefficient of thermal expansion or contraction exist.

The de Broglie equation predicts that eveiy particle has wave characteristics. The wave properties of subatomic particles such as electrons and neutrons play important roles in their behavior, but larger particles such as Ping-Pong balls or automobiles do not behave like waves. The reason is the scale of the waves. For all except subatomic particles, the wavelengths involved are so short that we are unable to detect the wave properties. Example illustrates this. 

In the natural world, carotenoid oxidation products are important mediators presenting different properties. Many other products can be used as softeners but are less important commercially because of greater cost and/or inferior properties. Examples are anionic surfactants such as long-chain (C16-C22) alkyl sulphates, sulphonates, sulphosuccinates and soaps. These have rather low substantivity and are easily washed out. Nonionic types of limited substantivity and durability, usually applied by padding, include polyethoxylated derivatives of long-chain alcohols, acids, glycerides, oils and waxes. They are useful where ionic surfactants would pose compatibility problems and they exhibit useful antistatic properties, but they are more frequently used as lubricants in combination with other softeners, particularly the cationics.

Barbiturate The family name for a group of drugs with anticonvulsant, anaesthetic and sedative-hypnotic properties. Examples include amylobarbitone and pheno-barbitone. The problem of dependence and the introduction of safer benzodiazepine alternatives has resulted in a marked reduction in their clinical use. 

Chemists have synthesized a spectacular array of submicron- and nano-particles with well-defined size and atomic structure and very special properties. Examples include CdSe quantum dots and novel spheres and rods. Transport enters the picture via fundamental studies of the physical processes that affect the synthesis, which must be understood for even modest scale-up from the milligram level. Likewise, processes for assembling fascinating face-centered-cubic crystals or ordered multilayers must concentrate on organizing the particles via flow, diffusion, or action of external fields. Near-perfection is possible but requires careful understanding and control of the forces and the rates. 

Starches with modified properties can be obtained in several ways. One way is to use a source with starch that has different properties. Examples of this are waxy maize, which gives almost pure amylopectin, and tapioca. These are still starch in food law.

Total inverse produces cumbersome sets of equations, especially when errors are taken into account. As usual, not considering errors amounts to taking uncorrelated variables with unit variances, but offers attractive illustrative properties. Examples of application abound in literature, but do not usually give enough detail for the student to use them as practical illustrative references. For these reasons, a simple illustration with no errors will be presented, and readers interested in a complete treatment should refer to Tarantola (1987).
