Until recently, halogen-free products were only available in Europe, but Sony has now adopted global design specifications to ensure that all their projects meet the same standards. Sony aims to have all product lines free of brominated flame retardants by the end of 2005 if substitutes are found to be safer. They also aim to phase out all uses of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) by 2005 as well as lead solder, and specified heavy metals. For example, a Walkman model has PVC-free cables and no brominated flame retardants or lead solder in the printed circuit board.

Daily project meeting At this time, each team member updates progress and expresses problems to which the project team needs to react quickly. The problems can be requirement ambiguities, technical difficulties, delays in task completions, and so on. Also, the project manager and the technical lead have to step out and take responsibility for helping the project team to solve these problems. 

The formal Group Meeting has the same basic format and objectives as a Project Meeting. The requirements for the successful running of these types of meetings are as follows. 

Establish cross-functional teams at the start of the project. The team members must be people who are able to act on decisions made at project meetings, which should be action orientated and not talking shops. 

Assess the success of your project based on how well your project meets the design criteria. 

Fora small project, notes of the project meetings (with handouts and reports) may be good enough for documentation. 

Negotiation of use of resources versus time performance. Preparation and initiation of major decisions. Organization and chairing of project meetings.

A frequent pattern encountered in design processes is that of distributed activities Several simultaneous activities require a considerable exchange of information between the actors involved (e.g., between several managers, engineers, and technicians at a project meeting). Even if the exact nature of this information is neglected in a model - for instance, if it is unknown a priori - the strong interdependencies between the activities should be recorded. 

The third core connector is the synchronous communication, it connects activities whose execution requires communication between the actors involved (e.g., during project meetings). 

Are the project meetings efficient Do they have a well-defined goal Do their different professional backgrounds impede the communication between the participants ... 

The IMPROVE project has had a lot of interaction with software vendors all along during dedicated workshops, project meetings, and scientific conferences. Furthermore, nearly all tool subprojects of IMPROVE had a - more or less long-lasting - connection to industry. Despite these significant efforts, the IMPROVE project has not been able to broadly influence the developments of the major vendors of process engineering software. 

As a follow-up to the RTD or LIFE projects, useful interactions may occur at the occasion of yearly meetings. Participation of policy officers in all project meetings may not be practicable due to a lack of resources but efforts are needed to organise regular joint meetings focusing on specific themes. This is already happening in the WFD sector (Quevauviller et al., 2005) and should be systematised. 

The network includes 4 MS, 10 NMS and 3 ACC. Activities carried out in 17 countries need a timely and firm coordination. Therefore, the management of SAFEFOODNET is assigned to a specific work package (WP1). WP1 addresses the co-ordination of administrative and scientific areas of the project. It will assure a well-timed delivery of internal and official documents. WP1 has the task to create and maintain the administrative and technical archive of accounts, contractual record, and progress reports, intermediate and final deliverables. Moreover, the management will include organisation of project meetings communication with European Commission, circulation of documents to partners. 

The dynamics of a large project meeting are just very different from those of a smaller group, and under some circumstances divisiveness, indifference, or worse can take over. One theory is that there s some sort of natural tendency for people to associate in units of a few famihes or tribes of no more than a couple of dozen people at work here, and that in larger groups an inexorable kind of social mitosis takes over to split off a second tribe. This kind of division, however, would spell ruination for the project team, where unity is strength.

Informal sensory assessment is a very common situation in many FMCG companies. During project meetings, team members often evaluate sets of prototypes, of varied recipes in order to select different options (to set process parameters, to select ingredients, etc.). Important decisions can be made on the basis of these evaluations. Participants may include R D team members as well as members from other departments (marketing, quality, purchasers and top management). Sometimes, suppliers also participate in such evaluations (e.g. from flavour houses).

Providing a framework to analyse the trade-off between risk and return, this model calculates the rate of return that investors will require in order to compensate for the risk involved with investing in a particular firm (as opposed to investing in risk-free government bonds).
