Software vendors

The input-data requirements and steps needed to set up the database for a computer-based vibration-monitoring program vary depending on the analyzer/software vendor and the system s capabilities. This section discusses the input required for such a database. However, this information should be used in conjunction with the vendor s user manual to ensure proper implementation. 

With the widespread commercialization of molecular modeling software in the 1980s, came both a boon and a bane to the computational chemist and pharmaceutical companies. The boon was that the software vendors sent marketing people to individual companies as well as to scientific meetings. The marketeers would extol the virtues of the programs they were pushing. 

As the twentieth century came to a close, the job market for computational chemists had recovered from the 1992-1994 debacle. In fact, demand for computational chemists leaped to new highs each year in the second half of the 1990s [135]. Most of the new jobs were in industry, and most of these industrial jobs were at pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical companies. As we noted at the beginning of this chapter, in 1960 there were essentially no computational chemists in industry. But 40 years later, perhaps well over half of all computational chemists were working in pharmaceutical laboratories. The outlook for computational chemistry is therefore very much linked to the health of the pharmaceutical industry itself. Forces that adversely affect pharmaceutical companies will have a negative effect on the scientists who work there as well as at auxiliary companies such as software vendors that develop programs and databases for use in drug discovery and development. 

Customers are right to carefully consider the hnancial stability of the software vendor offering the ELN system. Besides technical soundness, it is important to consider whether the software vendor will be in business in 10 years time to support and enhance the ELN system. Is the vendor hnancially stable and likely to survive cyclical economic downturns and recessions ... 

There are other ways to convert a single piece of SAS output to PDF. You can use a free script found on the Internet, such as ascii2pdf, or purchase a PDF file converter from a third-party software vendor. If you have Acrobat Distiller with Acrobat Version 5, you can use the PDF distiller macros in Microsoft Office to print a single file from Microsoft Word to PDF. 

To support decision making in supply chains, advanced planning systems (APS) have been developed and successfully applied in industry by several software vendors. Most of these systems rely on some kind of decomposition of planning tasks into software modules as shown in Figures 11.1 and 11.2. 

Many LP software vendors advertise in the monthly journal OR/MS Today, published by INFORMS. For a survey of LP software, see Fourer (1997, 1999) in that journal. All vendors now have Websites, and the following table provides a list of LP software packages along with their Web addresses. 

But software vendors aren t keen on letting people see their source code they d rather give you the executable and (if you insist) the spec. This meant providing ways in which... 

This list includes all kinds of development work. We have already discussed model frameworks and template packages, which can be valuable to an enterprise. They are white-box assets What you see is what is they offer. By contrast, an executable piece of software, delivered without source code, can perform a useful and well-defined function and yet not be open to internal inspection. Software vendors prefer such black-box components. 

The third module is the simulator itself. As stated earlier, each of simulators from the different software vendors uses the core code from Berkeley to iterate solutions of the circuit using mesh equations. 

From the middle to late 1990s, the situation changed when major chemistry software vendors started migrating their chemical information databases from proprietary formats to Oracle-based relational databases. Another positive move was that these vendors also started releasing chemical structure... 

Other structure-encoding schemas are developed by software vendors and academia such as Daylight Smiles, CambridgeSoft ChemDraw Exchange (CDX), and Chemical Markup Language (CML), and they all have advantages and disadvantages. The MDL CT File Format is the only one that is supported by almost all chemical informatics software vendors. 

Some systems support various structure formats and need to convert the structures from one format to another from time to time. Although this may not be required by a registration system, it could be very useful in other types of chemical information systems such as molecular modeling. The good news is that some tools from the major chemical informatics software vendors can do the conversions. In this situation, commercial solutions make sense because you do not want to reinvent the wheel. 

Commercial software vendors provide tools that can codify these chemistry rules. MDL Cheshire, CambridgeSoft ChemOffice, and Accerlys Accord Structure Checker are three examples. The recommendation is to leverage these tools. However, you do not want to be locked into these tools (although that is what the vendors would prefer). What you want is a design that allows you to easily unplug one tool and plug in another when necessary. 

Chemometrics software vendors have come a long way in facilitating good documentation of models.
