Unlike incompatible heterogeneous blends of elastomer-elastomer, elastomer-plastic, and plastic-plastic, the reactively processed heterogeneous blends are expected to develop a variable extent of chemical interaction. For this reason the material properties, interfacial properties, and phase morphology of reactively processed blends would differ significantly from heterogeneous mixtures. [Pg.467]

Elastomers. Elastomers is a generic name for polymers that exhibit rubberlike elasticity. Elastomers are soft yet sufficiently elastic that they can be stretched several hundred percent under tension. When the stretching force is removed, they retract rapidly and recover their original dimensions. [Pg.1006]

Elastomers. Elastomers are polymers or copolymers of hydrocarbons (see Elastomers, synthetic Rubber, natural). Natural mbber is essentially polyisoprene, whereas the most common synthetic mbber is a styrene—butadiene copolymer. Moreover, nearly all synthetic mbber is reinforced with carbon black, itself produced by partial oxidation of heavy hydrocarbons. Table 10 gives U.S. elastomer production for 1991.
