Slurry milling also affords better containment than dry milling by lowering the amount of dry powder handling. While advances have been made in containment technologies, exposure or opportunity for exposure is increased as dry product has a propensity to migrate and become airborne more so than product in a suspension.

They were originally installed in 1961 as slurry mills. No. 9 was converted to a cement mill in 1984 and No. 10 in 1987, both as open circuit mills (see Figure 1).

Steeping. Sheet, roU, or suitably milled flock pulp is metered into a pulper along with vigorously stirred 18% sodium hydroxide solution at 50°C. The resulting slurry, containing about 5% finely dispersed pulp, passes to a buffer tank from which it is metered to a slurry press that sieves out the swollen fiber and returns the pressings soda for concentration correction and reuse. The cellulose reacts with the soda as a complex alcohol to form the sodium salt or alk-ceU. 

Originally designed for the continuous filtration of conditioned sewage sludges, as were most of the filter belt presses available, the Manor Tower press is increa singly used for the treatment of paper mill sludge, coal, or flocculated clay slurries. 

After acid removal, scrap batteries are fed to a hammer mill in which they are ground to <5 cm particles. The ground components are fed to a conveyor and passed by a magnet to remove undesirable contamination. The lead scrap is then classified on a wet screen through which fine particles of lead sulfate and lead oxide pass, and the large oversize soHd particles are passed on to a hydrodynamic separator. The fine particles are settled to a thick slurry and the clarified washwater recirculated to the wet screen. 

In addition to encompassing all of the unit operations in the plant, the plant flow sheets may also include materials handling operations associated with the transport and storage of materials in and around the mill. Typically, flow sheets provide quantitative information regarding water and slurry flows, toimages, and assays. 

Dry soHds, such as as-rnined ore, emshed ore, and dried concentrates, are transported using tmeks, rail cars, ore passes, conveyor belts (see Conveying), or slurry pipelines (qv) as dictated by the logistics, distances involved, and capacity. Within the mill, conveyor belts are more common, but for fine particles, tailings, and coal, slurry transportation is more typical.
