Segments. Segments for heavy-duty use such as for medium-sized tmcks ate produced by a dry-mix process. The fiber, modifiers, and a dry novolak resin are mixed in an appropriate mixer. The blend is then formed into about a 60 by 90 cm preform (or briquet) at 3—4 MPa (400—600 psi). The briquets are hot-pressed for 3—10 min at 140—160°C and then cooled. The resin is only partially cured at this point to be thermoplastic when subsequently reheated for bending. The hot-pressed preforms are then cut to desired size and bent at 170—190°C and cured in curved molds for 4—8 h at 220—280°C. Final grinding produces the finished segments. [Pg.274]

In batch operations, mixing takes place until a desired composition or concentration of chemical products or solids/crystals is achieved. For continuous operation, the feed, intermediate, and exit streams will not necessarily be of the same composition, but the objective is for the end/exit stream to be of constant composition as a result of the blending, mixing, chemical reaction, solids suspension, gas dispension, or other operations of the process. Perfect mixing is rarely totally achieved, but represents the instantaneous conversion of the feed to the final bulk and exit composition (see Figure 5-26). [Pg.312]

If the feed time of a concentrated fluid is short the reaction will often be completed within the circulation zone, outside the impeller zone. Macromixing can then be important and the blend time will be an important scale-up parameter. Mixing processes involved in the manufacture of disperse systems, whether suspensions or emulsions, are far more problematic than those employed in the blending of low-viscosity miscible liquids due to the multi-phasic character of the systems and deviations from Newtonian flow behavior. It is not uncommon for both laminar and turbulent flow to occur simultaneously in different regions of the system. In some regions, the flow regime may be in transition, i.e., neither laminar nor turbulent but somewhere in between. The implications of these flow regime variations for scale-up are considerable.
