Printers

The aromatic extracts have been used in the paint industry to partially replace linseed oil. They are still used for producing printer s ink. In addition, they are finding a variety of applications as plasticizers in the rubber industry or for the manufacture of plastics such as PVC. 

A hardcopy of an image can be provided for special occasions. These hard copies are made by a laser printer.

Another example of deahng with molecular structure input/output can be found in the early 1980s in Boehiinger Ingelheim. Their CBF (Chemical and Biology Facts) system [44] contained a special microprocessormolecular structures. Moreover, their IBM-type printer chain unit had been equipped with special chemical characters and it was able to print chemical formulas. 

There is often a fundamental disparity between the graphic ability of computer monitors and that of printers. Monitors may use anywhere from 8-bit color (256 colors) to 24-bit color (16 million colors). Printers, except for dye sublimation models, use four colors, which are printed in a pattern that tricks the eye into seeing all colors. Monitors generally use about a 72-dpi (dots per inch) screen resolution, as compared to printer resolutions of 300 dpi or better. 

The program uses dynamic memory allocation within a memory limit that must be set manually if the default is insufficient. The program does store data in scratch files, but the size of these files has been kept to a minimum. The output is neatly formatted, but designed for wide carriage printers.

The input could be from a PC (personal computer), as in word processing, but could equally well be from an instrument the output could be to a video screen, a printer, or to the same or another instrument (Figure 42.9). All these functions are organized by the central processor in so-called real time, i.e., virtually immediately. 

A computer must communicate with a variety of peripheral devices (keyboard, mouse, printer, mass spectrometer). A central processing unit (CPU) controls the flow of information to each, rather like a choreographer directing complicated dance routines.

In addition, most devices provide operator control of settings for temperature and/or response slope, isopotential point, zero or standardization, and function (pH, mV, or monovalent—bivalent cation—anion). Microprocessors are incorporated in advanced-design meters to faciHtate caHbration, calculation of measurement parameters, and automatic temperature compensation. Furthermore, pH meters are provided with output connectors for continuous readout via a strip-chart recorder and often with binary-coded decimal output for computer interconnections or connection to a printer. Although the accuracy of the measurement is not increased by the use of a recorder, the readabiHty of the displayed pH (on analogue models) can be expanded, and recording provides a permanent record and also information on response and equiHbrium times during measurement (5).
