Analogue models

In addition, most devices provide operator control of settings for temperature and/or response slope, isopotential point, zero or standardization, and function (pH, mV, or monovalent—bivalent cation—anion). Microprocessors are incorporated in advanced-design meters to faciHtate caHbration, calculation of measurement parameters, and automatic temperature compensation. Furthermore, pH meters are provided with output connectors for continuous readout via a strip-chart recorder and often with binary-coded decimal output for computer interconnections or connection to a printer. Although the accuracy of the measurement is not increased by the use of a recorder, the readabiHty of the displayed pH (on analogue models) can be expanded, and recording provides a permanent record and also information on response and equiHbrium times during measurement (5).

There have been a number of hypotheses regarding the mode of action of /8-lactam antibiotics [237,238]. That most widely used at present is the structural analogue hypothesis [183,215], based on the structural similarity between penicillins and a possible conformation of the acyl-D-alanyl-D-alanine end of the N-acetylmuramyl-pentapeptide strand of the bacterial cell wall. A number of experimental data support this hypothesis (for recent reviews see [237] and [238]) and the model attractively explains the mechanism of action of /3-lactam antibiotics, especially penicillins. Nevertheless, certain more recent data contradict the structural analogue model [239-241] and a conformational response model has been set up [242,243]. It must be emphasized, however, that the contradictions are sometimes only apparent, and a one-sided interpretation of the structure-activity data may lead to false conclusions, e.g. the problem of the 6(7)a-substitution in penicillins and cephalosporins.

The description of C02-diffusion in leaves by Fick s law in the form of Eq. (8b) is convenient because it allows the use of electrical analogue models. In this way the process of C02 diffusion can be described by a series of resistances. However, the external C02 is not the only C02 source for the C02 fixing enzyme system because within the plant cells C02 is produced by respiratory processes (see 6.4.). Another important aspect that students should understand about molecular models is that they are not scale models (Hardwicke, 1995). It is with an understanding that they are analogue models with different scopes and limitations that students will be able to use them in explaining and predicting the diverse properties of substances.
