Complex applications

A very important but rather complex application of surface chemistry is to the separation of various types of solid particles from each other by what is known as flotation. The general method is of enormous importance to the mining industry it permits large-scale and economic processing of crushed ores whereby the desired mineral is separated from the gangue or non-mineral-containing material. Originally applied only to certain sulfide and oxide ores. [Pg.471]

A somewhat more complex application of this notion is represented by the CNS stimulant fencamfine (83). Diels-Alder addition of cyclopentadiene and nitrostyrene affords the norbomene derivative, 80. Catalytic hydrogenation reduces both the remaining double bond and the nitro group (81). ° Condensation with acetaldehyde gives the corresponding imine (82) a second reduction step completes the synthesis of fencamfine (83). ... [Pg.74]

A variety of aldehyde/alkyne reductive couplings involving the stoichiometric use of early transition metals (Ti and Zr) have been developed (Scheme 27) [68-70]. The low cost and ease of handling of titanium alkox-ides render these stoichiometric processes very practical despite the lack of catalytic turnover. Recent variants of stoichiometric processes involving titanium alkoxides have demonstrated impressive scope in relatively complex applications [71-73]. [Pg.31]

Another practical limitation in complex applications lies in the fact that, if temperature is used as a control parameter, one needs to worry about the integrity of a system that is heated too much (e.g., water-membrane systems or a protein heated above its denaturation temperature). When issues such as those mentioned above are addressed, parallel tempering can be turned into a powerful and effective means of enhanced conformational sampling for free energies over a range of temperatures for various systems. [Pg.290]

Finally, as robot users develop more familiarity with the capabilities of systems, manufacturers are conceiving and requesting more and more complex applications. Vendors may prefer to select less complex, high-volume applications which may have greater application volume potential. Between these two aspirations, there may develop a presently unfulfilled need for some third party to bridge the gap between what the users would like to have and what the vendors would like to provide. [Pg.12]

Tailor-made macromolecules have come into the focus of polymer science to overcome the challenges of a number of complex applications from the nano to the macro scale. Materials scientists have been designing and synthesizing tailor-made macromolecules specific for each application. These materials are composed of different monomeric units, chemical functionalities, and topologies. The challenge has been to control precisely the position of the functionality on the polymer, to determine the necessary ratio of monomeric units, as well as to understand the effect of the molecular architecture on the material performance. [Pg.19]

The book presents some basic considerations regarding liquid surfaces. After an introduction, the liquid-solid interface phenomena is described. Following this, the colloid chemistry systems are discussed, followed by emulsion science and technology. In the last chapter, more complex application examples are described. These are examples where different concepts of surface and colloid chemistry are involved in some mixed manner. [Pg.258]
