Winch operations can be particularly hazardous for both powered and/or non powered plant and need to be carefully monitored to ensure that anchors and lines arc not overloaded and that they are not fouled by other vessels or fishery equipment (Figure 5.12). There is limited guidance on the use of winches in this environment although the CIP Construction Manual covers some issues. A summary guide for good practice is given in the box below and Section 2.2.8. [Pg.87]

In addition to all this, plant personnel need regular training in fire drill. It is good practice to issue a pocket card giving the basic actions in the case of fire and other emergencies. Fire and first aid teams should be trained in any special procedures relevant to the new plant or process and should become familiar with the treatment procedures to be followed after exposure to the chemicals used in the process. [Pg.18]

Berwanger for instance, states it has performed 2000+ audits and that they have never encountered a plant that did not have a pressure relief issue. From my personal experience, I can confirm that only a few of the plants I visited had no problems in complying with good safety relief practices and/or codes, but more importandy many had regularly installed the wrong valve for a particular application or simply installed the valve incorrecdy. This is of concern, to say the least. The extent of this risk merits the attention of those who are accountable to the company s stockholders and the safety of its personnel. [Pg.279]

Internal safety inspections are important features in good safety practice. In daily production tasks, it is not always possible to detect all safety deficiencies. It is also well known that experienced employees can be too familiar with their work to note even imminent dangers. Regular walk-through surveys are therefore required. Safety checks may be conducted weekly, monthly or with some other level of frequency, depending on local risk conditions. It is usually advisable to use a checklist form appropriate to the plant, in order to conduct a systematic consideration of all of the relevant hazards. In the case of advanced safety inspection routines documented and issued using company systems, there is also a communication tool and checkout for the implementation of corrective measures by management. [Pg.14]

Guidance Notes issued by the HSE have no legal status. They are issued on a purely advisory basis to provide guidance on good health and safety practices, specific hazards, etc. There are five series of Guidance Notes - General, Chemical Safety, Plant and Machinery, Medical and Environmental Hygiene. [Pg.50]
