Diagnostic tool

The present work was done with the aim to evaluate the efficiency of the acoustic emission method as a diagnostic tool for analysing a carbon plastic composite and its adhesive joints. The samples of the carbon plastic type UKN-5000 were used in the test. Non-defected samples and samples with artificial defects were tested. [Pg.83]

Methacrylic acid polymer is iasoluble ia the monomer, which may result ia the plugging of transfer lines and vent systems. Polymers of the lower alkyl esters are often soluble ia the parent monomer and may be detected by an iacrease ia solution viscosity. Alternatively, dilution with a nonsolvent for the polymer such as methanol results ia the formation of haze and can be used as a diagnostic tool for determining presence of polymer. [Pg.254]

The color development of photochromic compounds can also be utili2ed as a diagnostic tool. The temperature dependence of the fa ding of 6-nitroindolinospiropyran served as the basis for a nondestmctive inspection technique for honeycomb aerospace stmctures (43). One surface of the stmcture to be exarnined was covered with a paint containing the photochromic compound and activated to a violet color with ultraviolet light. The other side of the stmcture was then heated. The transfer of heat through the honeycomb stmcture caused bleaching of the temperature-dependent photochromic compound. Defects in the honeycomb where heat transfer was inhibited could be detected as darker areas. [Pg.165]

Note that Eq. (40d), in fact, is redundant, because the other three equations form a closed set. Nonetheless, if we solve the equations of motion for s as well, we can use the following, as a diagnostic tool, because this quantity has to be conserved during the simulation even though //nos6 is no longer a Hamiltonian ... [Pg.60]

By measuring the retention volume of a solute, the distribution coefficient can be obtained. The distribution coefficient, determined over a range of temperatures, is often used to determine the thermodynamic properties of the system this will be discussed later. From a chromatography point of view, thermodynamic studies are also employed as a diagnostic tool to examine the actual nature of the distribution. The use of thermodynamics for this purpose will be a subject of discussion in the next chapter. It follows that the accurate measurement of (VV) can be extremely... [Pg.28]

Resistance measurements on substances under high pressure have long been a primary tool to investigate phase transformations and to study piezoresis-tive effects. Indeed, resistance measurements were the primary diagnostic tool... [Pg.126]

The reactivity of various steroid alcohols decreases in the order primary > secondary (equatorial) > secondary (axial) > tertiary. The only systematic investigation relating to the selective protection of steroidal hydroxyl functions has been carried out with the cathylate (ethyl carbonate) group. Since only equatorial hydroxyl groups form cathylates this ester has been used as a diagnostic tool to elucidate the configuration of secondary alcohols. [Pg.380]

While Deming s work serves as the foundation of TQM, the Baldridge award and many other quality systems, it requires translation to turn his points into the elements of a management system. His points can be used as a simple checklist, but are hard to measure against or even to interpret consistently—making it difficult to use them as a diagnostic tool. [Pg.146]

A hypsochromic shift of 20-50 cm is observed in the double-bond stretching region, when the enamines are converted to the corresponding iminium salts by the electrophilic addition of a proton at the /3-carbon atom. The shift is accompanied by an enhancement in the intensity of the band. Leonard and co-workers (68,71-74) have used this absorption shift as a diagnostic tool for the determination of the position of the double bond... [Pg.39]

A useful diagnostic tool for investigating possible hydration of cations of bases for which pA is greater than about one is the measurement of their ultraviolet spectra in aqueous acid solutions and also in an anhydrous acidic solvent such as dichloroacetic acid (for which the Hammett acidity function, Hq, is — 0.9, and in which hydration of the cation cannot occur). This technique has been used with quinazoline to obtain spectra approximating those of the hydrated and anhydrous cations, respectively. For weaker bases, spectral measurements in sulfuric acid-water mixtures of increasing acid content may be used to reveal a progressive conversion of hydrated into anhydrous species as the thermodynamic activity of the water decreases. [Pg.48]

The use of vibration analysis is not restricted to predictive maintenance. This technique is useful for diagnostic applications as well. Vibration monitoring and analysis are the primary diagnostic tools for most mechanical systems that are used to manufacture products. When used properly, vibration data provide the means to maintain optimum operating conditions and efficiency of critical plant systems. Vibration analysis can be used to evaluate fluid flow through pipes or vessels, to detect leaks, and to perform a variety of non-destmctive testing functions that improve the reliability and performance of critical plant systems. [Pg.664]

Vibration analysis is useful as a diagnostic tool for locating loose or foreign objects in process lines or vessels. This technique has been used with great success by the nuclear power industry and it offers the same benefits to non-nuclear industries. [Pg.665]

Science of rotor-bearing-support system design and operation. Predictive maintenance technique that uses spectrographic, wear particle, ferrography, and other measurements of the lubricating oil as a diagnostic tool. [Pg.696]

When using vibration data as a diagnostic tool, you must always adjust or normalize the data to the actual load that was present when the data set was acquired. [Pg.714]

A clear understanding of the mode shape, or shaft deflection, of a machine s rotating element is a valuable diagnostic tool. Both broadband and narrowband filtered energy windows can be used at each measurement point and orientation across the machine. The resultant plots, one in the vertical plane and one in the horizontal plane, provide an approximation of the mode shape of the complete machine and its rotating element. [Pg.731]
