In water pollution studies, the oxygen content can be measured by making the water alkaline and shaking a measured volume with an oxygen-free solution containing Mn- (aq). The solution is acidified with sulphuric acid, potassium iodide added and the liberated iodine titrated with sodium thiosulphate. [Pg.389]

The nonvisual or subtle effects of air pollutants involve reduced plant growth and alteration of physiological and biochemical processes, as well as changes in the reproductive cycle. Reduction in crop yield can occur without the presence of visible symptoms. This type of injury is often related to low-level, long-term chronic exposure to air pollution. Studies have shown that field plantings exposed to filtered and unfiltered ambient air have produced different yields when no visible symptoms were present (5). Several round-robin intercalibrations for trace metals in seawater [26-30] have demonstrated a marked improvement in both analytical precision and numerical agreement of results among different laboratories. The potential for the employment of plasma emission spectrometry is enormous and it is finding use in almost every field where trace element analysis is carried out. Despite the technical advances in the past decade, no apparatus for measurement of the odour strength has been developed.
