Applications The main application fields of PIXE are earth science, air pollution studies (aerosol analysis), mineralogical studies, forensic science, arts and archaeology. In the external-beam PIXE technique, the proton beam is taken out to ambient air. This mode finds application in the analysis of art objects (paintings, books, etc.).

In this case, the mineralogical studies on the mechanism of sulfide alteration and on the genesis and evolution of secondary oxidation products are of paramount environmental relevance because they allow a better understanding of the source and the mechanisms of release of the ecotoxic elements and the effective... 

Detailed mineralogical studies have shown that pyrite of different generations is the main form containing siderophile elements, and their zonal distribution is connected both to the position of wall rock pyritization zones and to the concentration changes of these elements within the pyrites. 

Experience in this laboratory has shown that even with careful attention to detail, determination of coal mineralogy by classical least-squares analysis of FTIR data may have several limitations. Factor analysis and related techniques have the potential to remove or lessen some of these limitations. Calibration models based on partial least-squares or principal component regression may allow prediction of useful properties or empirical behavior directly from FTIR spectra of low-temperature ashes. Wider application of these techniques to coal mineralogical studies is recommended.
