Researchers/research studies lead pollution

Over the next 30 years, Patterson used mass spectroscopy and clean laboratory techniques to demonstrate the pervasiveness of lead pollution. He traced the relationships between America s gas pump and its tuna sandwiches, between Roman slaves and silver dimes, and between Native American Indians and polar snows. He forged as close a connection between science and public policy as any physical scientist outside of medical research. He made the study of global pollution a quantitative science. And marrying his stubborn determination to his passionate conviction that science ought to serve society, Patterson never budged an inch. [Pg.180]

Only children born in 1977 were considered, as shown in Table 2. In the area studied there were 682, attending the second grade of 15 elementary schools. We selected 11 of these schools, excluding the other four because they were located in residential zones with low levels of lead pollution. All 532 children in these schools were informed about the research 77 children were excluded following criteria proposed by WHO (1984) (Table 3). [Pg.225]

Research dating back to the mid 1950 s has shown that volatile orgamc compounds (VOC s) photochemically react m the atmosphere and contribute to the formation of ground level ozone, a precursor to smog [1]. Medical studies have shown that human exposure to ozone can result in eye and smus tract irritation, and can lead to respiratory related illnesses [2]. Due to the unique and severe smog problems that affected many cities in the state of California, studies of the causes of ah pollution were initiated m the 1950 s [3]. Based on its findings, California formed the Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board m 1960 to regulate pollution from automobiles. [Pg.256]

Experimental investigations of spectroscopic and other physical-chemical properties of actinides are severely hampered by their radioactive decay and radiation which lead to chemical modifications of the systems under study. The diversity of properties of lanthanide and actinide compounds is unique due to the multitude of their valency forms (which can vary over a wide range) and because of the particular importance of relativistic effects. They are, therefore, of great interest, both for fundamental research and for the development of new technologies and materials. The most important practical problems involve storage and processing of radioactive waste and nuclear fuel, as well as pollution of the environment by radioactive waste, where most of the decayed elements are actinides. [Pg.230]
