International pollution European study

WHO has conducted three international studies of PCBs, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins, and polychlorinated dibenzo-furans in human milk during 1987-2003 (WHO 2000). The first two surveys were conducted in 1987-1988 and 1992-1993 in a number of European countries. The third, conducted in 2000-2003, included additional countries. A fourth survey has been developed with the intent to assess the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) found in human milk so that each country can better identify and set priorities among POPs for remedial action (WHO 2000). The sample population will include at least 50 mothers from each country who are planning to breastfeed (WHO 2005). Two sampling periods have been proposed, the first to obtain a baseline sample of POPs in representative... [Pg.84]

As governmental bodies, the Ministries of Environment are the competent authority for the majority of activities related to environmental issues such as trans-boundary air and water pollution, troposphere ozone and climate change, for instance. The main task of a ministry on these issues is therefore to elaborate and implement the environment policy. As it is nearly everywhere within the Member States of the European Union, the ministries carry out only a few studies and analysis by themselves, but a lot of routine work is allocated to different administrations or institutions. This approach was not followed in some countries of the 10 and the research and international collaboration on different environmental programmes suffered for a... [Pg.332]

Liliana B. Andonova is Assistant Professor of Government and Environmental Studies at Colby College. She is the author of Transnational Politics of the Environment The European Union and Environmental Policies in Central and Eastern Europe (MIT Press). The book compares the regulatory reform and implementation of chemical safety and air pollution policies in three CEE countries Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Poland. Her current research interests include trade and environment issues in transition economies, the role of public-private partnerships in global governance, climate change politics, and the influence of international institutions on the domestic scene. [Pg.317]
