Pollution Abatement and Conservation of Energy Review for Munitions Plant Modemi tion, TR 2210, PTA, Dover, N.J., 1976. [Pg.29]

Other factors that favor the choice of the steam ejector are the presence of process materials that can form soflds or require high alloy materials of constmction. Factors that favor the vacuum pump are credits for pollution abatement and high cost steam. The mechanical systems require more maintenance and some form of backup vacuum system, but these can be designed with adequate reflabiUty. [Pg.91]

A high yield chemical pulp, eg, 52—53% bleached yield from softwoods, can be obtained, but strength properties ate inferior to those obtained from the kraft process. If a protector, eg, potassium iodide, is added, an additional 2—3% yield is obtained, as is an improvement in all strength properties. The gas penetration problem can be minimized if ftbetization is accompHshed before treatment with oxygen. Oxygen treatment of virtually all types of semichemical and mechanical pulps has been explored (55). Caustic, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium carbonate have been used as the source of base (56,57). In all cases, the replacement of the kraft by these other processes has not been justified over the alternative of pollution abatement procedures. [Pg.271]

S oda—Anthraquinone. A few mills worldwide use soda pulping of hardwoods. In such cases, the addition of anthraquinone is immediately justifiable in terms of increased yield and upgraded pulp quaHty. The conversion of existing kraft mills is not as simple because AQ contributes no alkalinity to the process as sulfide does, and most kraft causticizing systems would have to be expanded by about 33%. This conversion is probably not justifiable in terms of the yield gain. The greatest benefit from AQ is for new mills in which expenditures for air pollution abatement devices can be reduced. [Pg.271]

Environmental regulation in the oleochemical industry addresses pollution of air, surface, and groundwater, along with land pollution and soHd waste disposal. This is adrninistered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the national level, an equivalent agency on the state level, and sometimes local agencies also deal with various aspects of pollution abatement. [Pg.92]

We begin by reviewing the regulatory driving force in the United States for air pollution abatement. To appreciate the objectives of our Federal air pollution control regulations, an understanding of the fate and transport mechanisms in the environment is important. Hence, some general discussions on the behavior of pollutants in the atmosphere are included in this chapter. [Pg.1]

Other Titles - The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 continue the federal acid rain research program and contain several provisions relating to research, development and air monitoring. They also contain provisions to provide additional unemployment benefits through the Job Training Partnership Act to workers laid off as a consequence of compliance with the Clean Air Act. The Act also contains provisions to improve visibility near National Parks and other parts of the country. Strict enforcement of the Clean Air Act Amendments is the driving force behind pollution abatement. Non-compliance is simply not an option, since there are both financial and criminal liabilities that outweigh any benefits derived from a business. [Pg.8]

Airborne particulate matter emissions can, to a great extent, be minimized by pollution prevention and emission control measures. Prevention is frequently more cost-effective than control and, therefore, should be emphasized. Special attention should be given to pollution abatement measures in areas where taxies and buses associated with particulate emissions may pose a significant environmental risk. [Pg.19]

Each chapter contains a section on recommended resources, which includes Web sites. Some of these sites contain additional tools such as software that you can download for calculation purposes or for equipment selection information or financial calculations. Developing a strong library of references and Web sites is important to acquiring skills and staying abreast with the technology advances in air pollution abatement. [Pg.48]

Make no mistake about it - air pollution abatement, especially based upon end-of-pipe treatment technologies is expensive. Not too long ago the prevailing attitude among industry stakeholders was that air pollution control was simply a part of the cost of doing business, and that add-on costs associated with compliance simply had to be passed on to the consumer s purchase price for products. With the intensity of international competition in the chemical and allied industries, this philosophy simply does not cut it anymore. [Pg.348]

We should note that in a general sense, the objective of pollution abatement is compliance. Whether we apply conventional controls or P2, the intent is to develop corrective actions that largely focus on the lowest achievable emission rate (LAER) technologies, and only sometimes on best available control technologies (BACT),... [Pg.354]

It has been proposed that a set of scheduled works may be assigned to local authorities. This class of works has been discussed in documents published by the Department of the Environment Air Quality Division and legislation came into force on 1 April 1991. It is proposed that these schedule (B) works will be licensed in much the same way as the existing scheduled works and that prior consent will be needed before operations of this type commence. This will give local authorities a much stronger hand in pollution abatement, and they will be able to avoid the establishment of premises in unsuitable areas or without adequate pollution-abatement equipment. At present, local authorities rely on planning conditions or nuisance provisions. [Pg.756]

Munition Plant Modernization Program. Both the US Army and the Navy have extensive plant modernization and pollution abatement programs planned and underway, and the waste-water picture is changing rapidly. So rapidly, in fact, that field data are out of date by the time they can be put into a report. Perhaps the best way to present the story is to force-fit all information into one of three time eras ... [Pg.799]

In the 20 years since the Brunddand report, great developments have taken place in industries toward sustainable practices. As a case in point, the problem of acid rain, an issue of concern in 1987, has improved to a large extent, thanks to catalytic pollution abatement both in stationary and automotive emissions. Catalysis for Green Chemistry and Engineering will continue to have a cracial role in improving the environmental performance of industry [25-27]. Nowadays, catalytic procedures are often implemented according to the green chemistry... [Pg.147]

It is the latter with which we will be concerned, a technology which has been touted as the answer to pollution abatement. Additionally, it has been recognized that World crude oil supplies will dwindle to zero within the next 100 years, and that a suitable energy replacement will be required. [Pg.344]

Here we describe an EP study of catalytic NO reduction by CO and by propene over Pt/P alumina. The latter process is especially significant for the removal of NO in oxidising environments, a key problem that must be overcome for pollution abatement from lean-bum gasoline engines. [Pg.514]

Since the late 1980s, several developed countries have made major public sector commitments to build awareness of cleaner production, also referred to as pollution prevention and waste minimization. These commitments, most notably in Denmark, the Netherlands, the U.K. and the U.S., have led the private sector to investigate and implement pollution prevention measures for existing processes and products. As a result, cleaner production is now seen in these countries as a potentially cost-effective complement to pollution abatement in meeting environmental standards. [Pg.14]
