Schedule of Works

An adequately documented requirement would be a written contract, schedule of work, and/or specification. However simple the requirement, it is wise to have it documented in case of a dispute later. The document needs to carry an identity and if subject to change, an issue status. In the simple case this is the serial numbered invoice and in more complicated transactions, it will be a multi-page contract with official contract number, date, and signatures of both parties. 

Scheduling of work in process engineering or design is a near impossibility as far as pin-point accuracy is concerned. The very developmental and planning nature of the early phases, as well as the continuous follow-through and follow-up, make this difficult. It is seldom that one can foresee specific changes, delays, etc. Very few projects are clear-cut and well defined ( frozen ) as to scope or design conditions except for small Jobs and repeat or duplicate projects. 

Scheduling of work tasks and therefore labor utilization can be carried out in a number of different methods on a computer, depending on the software system purchased. These methods can be similar to the manual system or they may take the form of automatic scheduling. That is, the work tasks are entered into the computer system with the appropriate hours and trades and the software program automatically schedules the hours evenly over the weeks of the year. In implementing such scheduling care has to be taken to ensure that such items as weekends, statutory holidays, annual leave, annual shutdown and seasonal...

Many laboratories maintain the master schedule on computer, and find it a helpful tool for the allocation of resources and the scheduling of work. A computerized master schedule can also provide the index of archive materials required by 58.190(e) of the regulations. 

In June, 1936, when the War Office drew up a preliminary schedule of works to be completed at Tunnel Quarry, it was thought desirable that as much as possible of the work should be done either by Royal Engineer detachments or by directly employed civilian labour. It is the job of the production department to arrange for the order in which the work will be done through routing and scheduling of work and to determine what machine tools, workplace materials, and operatives should do the work. 

A schedule gives information about a programme or timetable of work. It might be a list or a chart giving details of when certain events will take place, for example, when the electricians will start to do the first fix and how many days it will take. A simple bar chart is an easy-to-understand scheduie of work that shows how different activities interact on a project. Figure 5.3 shows a bar chart or schedule of work where activity A takes two days to complete and activity B starts at the same time as activity A but carries on for eight days, etc.

Scheduling of work depends on the nature of the business, personnel availability, equipment availability, and unexpected events. Effective scheduling of maintenance personnel in a perfect situation is simple. It is called area maintenance. That means to schedule the proper crafts to a specific area and complete all the maintenance tasks, rather than scheduling them to move from area to area, then back to the previous area to accomplish tasks on adjacent equipment. 

Shift Patterns (Chapter 9)—Shift patterns refer to the scheduling of work activity outside the standard office hours, such as in 24/7 control room operations. These operations assume continuous staffing aud a handover of duty from one team to another. The example shifts are assessed against human factors best practice. Comparison of the two proposed shift cycles (i.e., summer and winter) with a notional ideal on the HSE risk and fatigue indices reveals similar results.
