Several types of spontaneous periodic director pattern yield information about elastic coefficients. Static stripe textures, as described by Lonberg and Meyer [45], appear in polymer nematics if the twist/splay ratio below the critical value of 0.303. Calculations of director fields and the influence of elastic constants and external fields on the appearance of these periodic patterns have been performed by several authors (e.g. [49-51]). In nematic cells with different anchoring conditions at the upper and lower cell plates (hybrid cells), other types of striped texture appear these are similar in nature, but involve different director deformations and elastic coefficients. Moleculady mixed composites of montmorillonite clay and polyimide which have a higher resistance to gas permeation and a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than ordinary polyimides have been produced (60). These polyimide hybrids were synthesized using montmorillonite intercalated with the ammonium salt of dodecylamine. When polymerized in the presence of dimethyl acetamide and polyamic acid, the resulting dispersion was cast onto glass plates and cured. The cured films were as transparent as polyimide. [Pg.330]

Electronic Applications. The PGMs have a number of important and diverse appHcations in the electronics industry (30). The most widely used are palladium and mthenium. Palladium or palladium—silver thick-film pastes are used in multilayer ceramic capacitors and conductor inks for hybrid integrated circuits (qv). Demand for high performance SLI batteries has led to the development of smaller, lighter batteries that require less maintenance. The level of antimony is being decreased from the conventional 3—5% to 1.75—2.75% to minimise the detrimental effects. Lead alloys that contain no antimony have also been introduced. Figure 4 shows the data for PTFE used as the solid phase with the same liquid/liquid system where an oil-wetting cycle is observed. A Petri dish containing bacterial colonies is blotted with nitrocellulose paper. This transfers a large portion of each colony to the paper, which is saturated with a solution that lyses (breaks open) the cells. The DNA of the lysed colonies is denatured with alkali. The nitrocellulose paper is neutralized, washed, and the paper either baked in an oven or treated with ultraviolet light to immobilize the denatured DNA. The DNA on the paper is hybridized with the labeled probe of interest, and the excess label is washed off. The dried paper is exposed to photographic film and the film developed.
