Self criticism

Audits by INPO and the U.S. NRC aie a culmination of a high degree of self-auditing by the plant operators and the utihties themselves, often assisted by special third-party safety review boards set up to help carry out safety assessments (21). Self-auditing and self-criticism are essential to the process. These reflect the fundamental reactor safety principle that the owner-operator of the plant has the ultimate responsibiUty for plant safety. 

So how, in practice can big pharma become more self-aware and self-critical, and what can IT do to help There are two opposed views, evidenced by these interview comments ... 

A further unusual feature of the matrix-dependent polycondensation lies in the character of the nucleobases themselves. Purine mononucleotides undergo polycondensation, in good yields, at complementary matrices consisting of pyrimidine polymers. However, the synthesis of pyrimidine oligonucleotides from their mononucleotides at purine matrices is not effective. This important fact means that a pyrimidine-rich matrix leads to a purine-rich nucleic acid, which is itself not suitable to act as a matrix. This phenomenon also occurs when matrices are used which contain both basic species, i.e., purines and pyrimidines. An increase in the amount of purine in a matrix leads to a clear decrease in its effectiveness (Inoue and Orgel, 1983). However, the authors note self-critically that the condensation agent used cannot be considered to be prebiotic in nature.

Under certain circumstances, the courts will deny attorney-client privilege and order the disclosure of investigative reports. Other protections that may apply include The Work Product Doctrine and The Self-Critical Analysis Privilege, d)... 

The self-critical analysis privilege is not widely recognized. Counsel should be consulted about the possible use of this privilege.

Methodological studies inevitably lead to some revision and even rejection of past work. Archaeologists who were too readily persuaded to accept scientific results as absolute facts may be a little dismayed to find that some of these facts are now being questioned. They must remember that no discipline has a corner on infallability and that knowledge, in the sciences as well as in the humanities, advances slowly by a kind of iterative process in which error is gradually reduced to reach an approximation of truth. Uninhibited self-criticism is the surest indication that archaeometry is coming of age. 

The next book of Ya.B. s selected works (Particles, Nuclei, and the Universe) will contain biographies and essays on the works of A. Einstein [46 ], the outstanding Soviet physicist, Academician B. Konstantinov [47 ], and the eminent Soviet scientist, Professor D. A. Frank-Kamenetskii. These articles characterize not only the people they describe, but they also reveal the aspirations and world view of Ya.B. himself, just as does his self-critical scientific autobiography [49 ]. 

Maintain open dialogue with the employee. Offer the employee a chance for self-criticism. Allow the employee to offer reasons why performance was below standard. Allow the employee to suggest ways and an appropriate time frame to expect significant improvement. 

An individual analyst in most instances is concerned only with links from values in samples to similar values in certified RMs [9-13] or from calibrated instruments. When using an existing protocol, chemists must carefully follow all procedures, minimize errors, such as those resulting from contaminations, compled with the uncertainties in estimating these contaminations. Rigorously correct use of a protocol and aggressive self-criticism in its application constitute a professional challenge. 

In summary, criticism should be avoided here and in all management behavior, simply because it s counterproductive, and employees who feel accepted and valued by their supervisor will engage in self-criticism. This is, by far, more productive over the long term.

Evaluation The evaluation of the project should be done both by the pupils and the teacher. The pupils should estimate the qualities of what they have done before the teacher gives his evaluation. The evaluation of the project has to be done in the light of plans, difficulties in the execution and achieved results. Let the students have self criticism and look through their own failings and findings. This step is very useful because as a result of the project, the pupils can know the values of the information, interest, skills and attitudes that have been modified by the project. 

Haber s self-criticism was accurate he knew his own strengths and weaknesses. His mind, quick and sharp, was unparalleled in criticism, analyzing the strong and weak points of any argument. He could communicate scientific ideas, either in lectures or essays, better than almost any other scientist. Those gifts made him a superb teacher, mentor, and leader of research teams. What he lacked was intuition, a sense for what might lie beyond the horizon. His greatest accomplishment, the synthesis of ammonia, was more a product of raw determination and technical skill than intellectual brilliance. 

Haber s speech was not explicitly autobiographical he did not describe his own ambitions and failures. Between the lines of his retelling of Germany s recent history though, one hears self-criticism. 

In many cases, but unfortunately not in all, about halfway through these steps, or at least after the preliminary tests, the cause of the damage may be suspected and this may lead to a working hypothesis. This hypothesis then has to be either unequivocally verified or rejected on the basis of further tests. It is often hard to give up a hypothesis and look for a better one. Self-criticism and experience can be helpful here as weU as hterature searches and discussions with interested colleagues or other experts. 

My dad could get so discouraged and self-critical I had to cheer him up and give him lots of praise. My job was to get him feeling good about himself when he felt bad."... 

Sometimes a highly motivated only child can be unduly hard upon himself or herself. To nurture ambition, parents can encourage the child to refrain from self-punishment. They can also help the child from becoming unduly self-critical by modeling a lack of undue self-criticism themselves. 

Ever since This Is Spinal Tap, student films about performance, filmmaking, writing, and music have relied on the hybrid form loosely called the mockumentary. This is a form that both evokes realism and pokes fun at it. Not quite as intense as the satire, the mockumentary criticizes gently the subject of the film, which is often the media as it interacts with, and often creates, a star. In this sense, the mockumentary is a self-reflexive and self-critical form, as the "mock" in the word suggests. If your idea centers on the relationship between the public and a character, and if the media can play a role in the story, the mockumentary is an amusing and often insightful form. 

It seems to me that Stein s self-criticism of this model rules out the model, and an alternative explanation to geminate recombination should be sought. A possible explanation is that in the photochemical studies, where geminate recombination was postulated, the lower quantum yields observed at low scavenger concentrations is caused by back reactions with products. In many of these systems, yields were not linear with dose at low scavenger concentrations, and possibly the initial yield was not obtained by the extrapolation used. [Czapski and Ottolenghi have shown recently that in these systems the cage effect is non-existent, and the back reactions can account for the system s behavior (28).]... 

Bartnick et u/. (1985) found that medical students with lower self-assurance than average were more likely to pursue specialities with low patient contact such as pathology or pharmacology. Firth-Cozens (1999) found that characteristics such as high self-criticism in medical students were highly predictive of stress and depression in doctors 10 years later, and proposed that speciality choice may be involved in this pathway.
