Testing of Painted Products. The enhancement of paint adhesion is one of the principal functions of conversion coating (20—22). A group of tests based on product deformation is used to test the painted product. The appHance and cod-coating industries use the mandrel bend, the cross-hatch adhesion test, and the direct and reverse impact tests. Adhesion after a water soak is judged using a cross-hatch test performed on the exposed surface. [Pg.223]

While many industrial wastes are so low in nitrogen and phosphorus that these must be added if biologically based treatment is to be used, others contain very high levels ofthese nutrients. For example, paint-production wastes are high in nitrogen, and detergent production wastes are high in phosphorus. U.S. EPA proposed a concentration-based hazardous waste listing for certain waste solids and liquids generated from the production of paint on February 13, 2001.20 Following a review of the public comments and supplemental analyses based on those public comments, U.S. EPA determined that the paint wastes identified in the proposal do not present a substantial hazard to human health or the environment. Therefore, U.S. EPA did not list these paint production wastes as hazardous. Organic solvents inhaled by abusers include gasoline, glue, aerosols, amyl nitrite, butyl nitrite, typewriter correction fluid, lighter fluid, cleaning fluids, paint products, nail polish remover, waxes, and varnishes. At Desoto, in Greensboro, N.C., wash solvent from each solvent-based paint batch is separately collected and stored. When the same type of paint is going to be produced, waste solvent from the previous batch is used in place of virgin solvent, reducing the volume of the wastestreams which can contain metals as well as other paint wastes and solvent. In 1981, Desoto produced 25,000 gallons of waste mineral spirits. In 1982, when the system was implemented, waste solvent production amounted to 400 gallons.
