Biological Antioxidant Models. Tea extracts, tea polyphenol fractions, and purified catechins have all been shown to be effective antioxidants in biologically-based model systems. A balance between oxidants and antioxidants is critical for maintenance of homeostasis. Imbalances between free radicals and antioxidants may be caused by an increased production of free radicals or decreased effectiveness of the antioxidants within the reaction system. These imbalances can be caused by the radicals overwhelming the antioxidants within the system, or by an excess of antioxidants leading to a prooxidant functionaHty (105—118). While many industrial wastes are so low in nitrogen and phosphorus that these must be added if biologically based treatment is to be used, others contain very high levels ofthese nutrients. For example, paint-production wastes are high in nitrogen, and detergent production wastes are high in phosphorus. Treatment for removal of these nutrients is required in areas where eutrophication is a problem. 

Appendices This section is most likely to contain additional data associated with biological-based products. It should contain information as regards the facilities and equipment used for the manufacture of biotech products. Assessment of the risk of contamination from adventitious agents such as transmissible spongiform encephalopathy agents (TSEs), bacteria, mycoplasma, fungi or viruses should also be provided. Additional information on novel excipients that have not been used before should also be included in this section. 

Physiologically Based Phamiacokinetic (PBPK) Model—Comprised of a series of compartments representing organs or tissue groups with realistic weights and blood flows. These models require a variety of physiological information tissue volumes, blood flow rates to tissues, cardiac output, alveolar ventilation rates and, possibly membrane permeabilities. The models also utilize biochemical information such as air/blood partition coefficients, and metabolic parameters. PBPK models are also called biologically based tissue dosimetry models. 

Complementary and alternative medicines A group of practices and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine, including alternative medical systems (e.g., homeopathic medicine and naturopathic medicine), mind-body interventions (e.g., meditation and mental healing), biologically-based therapies (e.g., dietary supplements, vitamins, herbs, and other natural products), manipulative body-based methods (e.g., acupuncture and massage), and energy therapies (e.g., therapeutic touch and bioelectromagnetic-based therapies). 

We have already noted evidence for genetic factors that underlie the preference for and response to caffeine. These factors create a biologically based set of individual difference dimensions that may be modified by experience with the drug. In addition, there is evidence for a number of broader individual difference dimensions that appear to be relevant. These bipolar continua differentiate between subjects who are habitually high in arousal or arousability and those who are habitually low. The factors in question are personality dimensions that theoretically reflect underlying biological continua of arousal or arousability.238 Included among these dimensions are extraversion,58 impulsivity,239240 and sensation-seek-ing.94-241-242 We will take up the first two of these.
