Purely aromatic ketones generally do not give satisfactory results pinacols and resinous products often predominate. The reduction of ketonic compounds of high molecular weight and very slight solubility is facilitated by the addition of a solvent, such as ethanol, acetic acid or dioxan, which is miscible with aqueous hydrochloric acid. With some carbonyl compounds, notably keto acids, poor yields are obtained even in the presence of ethanol, etc., and the difficulty has been ascribed to the formation of insoluble polymolecular reduction products, which coat the surface of the zinc. The adffition of a hydrocarbon solvent, such as toluene, is beneficial because it keeps most of the material out of contact with the zinc and the reduction occurs in the aqueous layer at such high dilution that polymolecular reactions are largdy inhibited (see Section IV,143). [Pg.510]

Gas chromatography is commonly used to analyse mixtures for quantification. A wide variety of special detectors with adequate linear response ranges are available for quantification of various classes of compounds (cf. Table 4.14). Quantification by direct injection may be used to determine additives, residual monomers and solvents in product formulations, coated films, and solid materials [109]. On the other hand, reliable quantification by means of solid-injection PTV-GC, HS-GC and PyGC techniques is not always trivial. [Pg.193]

Some key attributes of coated products and coating processes that may well be used to set objectives for optimizing a coating process are shown in Table 2. In many cases, the attributes as listed are very subjective, and thus must be defined in clearly measurable terms if they are to be used as the basis for process optimization. Additionally, meeting defined objectives may equally be dependent on the existence of certain coating and tablet formulation attributes. Secondly, damage can been as product separation. Coatings contain varying amounts of solids depending on its function. To keep these solids suspended in a water medium, other additives such as cellulosic thickeners and LAS surfactants are used. These components can be attacked by microorganisms and can be broken down. As this happens, their ability to function properly diminishes and the solid matter of the formulation settles to the bottom of the container. [Pg.8]

A coating is selected on the basis of the location within the tank bottom, water layer, product exposed, vapor space and roof structure. In addition, coatings are sometimes used to maintain product purity. Often the internal bottom surface must be able to withstand the abrasive effects of slurry movement caused by internal flow patterns, mixers, or inlet and outlet flows or by mechanical action, such as the movement of roof drain hoses lying on the tank bottom. A benefit of a bottom liner is that it reduces the cleaning effort when the tank is removed from service for repairs or for inspection. [Pg.262]
