More than two-thirds of the naphthenic acid produced is used to make metal salts, with the largest volume being used for copper naphthenate, consumed in the wood preservative industry (see Wood). Metal salts used as paint driers accounted for only 16% of the naphthenic acid market in 1993 (see Paint). This is a dramatic contrast with 1977 usage, when 75% of the naphthenates went into the paint drier market. Cobalt. There is no U.S. mine production of cobalt. Refining of imported nickel—cobalt mattes has not occurred since the mid-1980s. About 1600 t of secondary cobalt was recycled from scrap by 13 faciUties in the United States representing - 22% of total U.S. consumption. The price of the metal was around 44/kg. Most is imported from Zaire and Zambia. Increasing quantities are coming from Russia. Historically, the price of cobalt has been quite volatile and dependent on the pohtical environment in those countries. Cobalt is used in superaHoys, 40% catalysts, 14% paint driers, 11% magnetic alloys, 10% and cemented carbides and other uses, 16%. 

The octylphenol condensate is used as an additive to lubricating oils and surface-active agents. Other uses of dimer are amination to octylamine and octyldiphenylamine, used in mbber processing hydroformylation to nonyl alcohol for phthalate production and carboxylation via Koch synthesis to yield acids in formulating paint driers (see Drying). 

Ethylhexanal, the reduced aldol condensation product of //-butyraldehyde, is converted into 2-ethylhexanoic acid [149-57-5] which is converted primarily into salts or metal soaps. These are used as paint driers and heat stabili2ers for poly(vinyl chloride). 

Branched-chain acids have a wide variety of industrial uses as paint driers (7), vinyl stabilizers (8), and cosmetic products (9). Cobalt and manganese salts of 2-ethyIhexanoic acid and neodecanoic acid are used as driers for paint, varnishes, and enamels litbium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum salts of 2-ethyIhexanoic acid are used in the formation of greases and lubricants (see Driers and metallic soaps). Derivatives of isostearic acid have been used as pour point depressants in two-cycle engine oils, as textile lubricants, and in cosmetic formulations. Further industrial appHcations can be found (10). 

Paint Driers and Polymer Additives. Paints based on alkyd resins (qv) dry by the oxidation and cross-linking of unsaturated side chains. Metal catalysts are included in paint formulations to promote this drying. Cerium carboxylates, eg, the naphthenate, are used as through driers, ie, to promote drying in the body of the paint film rather than at the film s surface (44). 

As a result of the diene addition reaction, CPD has been converted into innumerable derivatives, some of which are tabulated in Table 3. The products obtained from the diene addition reaction are extremely versatile chemicals suitable as intermediates for the production of plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, resins, paint driers, perfumes, and many other products. 

The second catalyst paste of the two-paste product is a curing agent. A wide variety of materials convert the Hquid polysulfide polymers to elastomeric products. Alkalies, sulfur, metallic oxides, metallic peroxides, organic peroxides, and many metal—organic salts, ie, paint driers, are all potential curing agents.

Similar reactions also occur with organic peroxides, dioximes, paint driers such as cobalt naphthenate and furfural. It is interesting to note that the cure time is dependent on the humidity of the atmosphere. With lead peroxide the rate doubles by increasing the relative humidity from 40 to 70%. Are used to accelerate autoxidation and hardening of oxidisable coatings. Metal soaps, used as paint driers, can be made from a variety of carboxylic acids, including the commercially important naphthenic and 2-ethyl hexanoic acids, tall oil, fatty acids, neodecanoic and isononanoic acid. Cobalt is unquestionably the most active drier metal available. Metallic driers such as cobalt naphthenate or octoate and zinc salts can interact with UVAs, HALS, or AOs.

Large volumes of soap are used in industrial applications as gelling agents lor kerosene, paint driers, and as surfactants in emulsion polymerization. See also Soaps. Concern over water eutrophication resulted in a ban of phosphorus in laundry detergents. Phosphates have been effectively replaced by combinations of zeolite, citrate, and polymers, coupled with rebalanced synthetic active systems. Soap itself is generally present only as a minor component of surfactants. 

There are several other manufacturers who supply zirconium octanoates as paint drier additives. These are not normally used as adhesion promoters or coupling agents. 

Motor fuels, solvents, toluene for explosives, etc. Illuminating oil, diesel fuel, gas adsorption oils. Heating fuels, diesel fuel, cracking stock, naphthenic acid which may be converted to lubricating oil additives, paint driers, fungicides, etc.
