In engineering practice, other important criteria mnst be considered in the development of a marketable product. Some of these are economic in nature, which, to some degree, are unrelated to scientific principles and engineering practice and yet are significant if a product is to be competitive in the commercial marketplace. Other criteria that should be addressed involve environmental and societal issnes such as pollution, disposal, recycling, toxicity, and energy. This final chapter offers relatively brief overviews of economic, environmental, and societal considerations that are important in engineering practice. 

Having defined and gathered data adequate for an initial reserves estimation, the next step is to look at the various options to develop the field. The objective of the feasibility study is to document various technical options, of which at least one should be economically viable. The study will contain the subsurface development options, the process design, equipment sizes, the proposed locations (e.g. offshore platforms), and the crude evacuation and export system. The cases considered will be accompanied by a cost estimate and planning schedule. Such a document gives a complete overview of all the requirements, opportunities, risks and constraints. 

The TAPPI monograph (64) is an excellent source of additional information on technical and economic aspects of wet strength. An informative overview of the chemistry and mechanisms involved in wet strength chemistry can be found in reference 65. 

Appendix III provides an overview of process economics. Two principal categories of expenditure are particularly important fixed and operating costs. Process economics is an essential element of a good design procedure. The objective of this appendix is to provide an overview of basic concepts in cost estimation and economics of chemical processes. For more details, the reacker is referred to Humphreys and Wellman (1996), Peters and Timmerhaus (1991), Garrett (1989) and Ulrich (1984).

This chapter adds the socio-economic dimension to the medical or technical perspectives of the proceeding contributions of this book. As its health economic terminology and approach might be unfamiliar to some readers, we start with a section on methodology. In particular, we present an overview of the concept of Cost-of-Illness (COI) and of relevant health economic evaluation techniques. In Sect. 2, we present the basic findings of a meta-analysis of the socio-economic costs of HIV/AIDS and of the socio-economic impact of antiviral intervention. The current state of analytical SPE was critically reviewed and no major changes of the technique have been observed. Overviews of the developments of the extraction technologies of secondary metabolites from plant materials refer to three types of conventional extraction techniques that involve the use of solvents, steam, or supercritical fluids. Each technique is described in detail with respect to typical processing parameters and recent developments. Biomass-based processes for the production of hydrogen can be either thermochemical or biological and can produce this clean carrier directly or through an intermediate, storable product. Also, the use of coproducts has to be addressed to improve the process economics and in view of the sustainability of using this natural resource. The general equilibrium structure of these models is based on Arrow and Debreu (1954). An introduction to applied general equilibrium analysis can be found in Shoven and Whalley (1984). I have presented a general socio-political overview of China. The in-depth analysis of China s political environment is both necessary and relevant. The prevailing political climate in China determines not only China s economic development path, but also its scientific and technological development path. Politics is China s "Great Helmsman". In the process, I hope I have provided sufficient background information on the Chinese psyche and society to aid in interpreting nuances when interacting with the Chinese. 

Some of the most important variations are the so-called Quasi-Newton Methods, which update the Hessian progressively and therefore economize compute requirements considerably. The most successful scheme for that purpose is the so-called BFGS update.
