Other Vehicles

The above projects have served to demonstrate the practical operation of fuel cell vehicles using PEMFC stacks. There is now little doubt that technically successful buses, cars and other vehicles can be manufactured and that the results from showcase in-service programmes have been encouraging. The remaining challenges relate to  

Other operational issues to be tackled include possible hydrogen release in confined spaces (garages, indoor car parks, tunnels), road accident situations and the need to train the emergency services to deal with hydrogen hazards, and the instruction of vehicle mechanics on how to handle the new technologies.

Rubber-mill chips are dissolved similarly to resins, to provide color concentrates. Dough mixer and chip concentrates must be diluted with solvent and other vehicles to make finished inks. The bicycle has stunning efficiency advantages over other vehicles for several reasons ... 

The light weight and mechanical efficiency not only allow the bicycle to be powered by a nonathlet-ic human, but it can be walked over extreme terrain, or laden ivith heavy cargo, or picked up and carried. These options make the bicycle more versatile than any other vehicle, and allow a bicycle user door-to-door, on-dcinand transport.

The principal change is the incorporation of a much larger warhead (29.9kg of HE) which makes it effective against fortifications as well as tanks, ships and other vehicles. Apart from liposomes, other vehicles for delivery of antigens to the immune system, such as iscoms, emulsions, and micellar structures, are presently under investigation (Jiskoot et al., 1986b Allison and Byars, 1986 Kersten et al., 1988a,b). 

Methanol is a clean-burning liquid that can be used to power electricity-generating turbines as well as a fuel for automobiles and other vehicles. It can also be a valuable feedstock for a variety of chemicals (e.g., in the manufacture of acetic...

Limitations on total volume, therefore, present difficulties for materials that cannot easily be dissolved or suspended. The most dilute solutions that can be administered for a limit-type test (5000 mg kg ), using the maximum volumes shown in Table 13.5, generally are 1% for aqueous mixtures and 50% for other vehicles.

Besides fuel-cell (electric) vehicles (FCV), there are other vehicle concepts under development, which are also based on electric drives ranked by increasing battery involvement in the propulsion system, and thus extended battery driving range, these are hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEV) - which both incorporate an ICE - and, finally, pure battery-electric vehicles (BEV), without an ICE. While electric mobility in its broadest sense refers to all electric-drive vehicles, that is, vehicles with an electric-drive motor powered by batteries, a fuel cell, or a hybrid drive train, the focus in this chapter is on (primarily) battery-driven vehicles, i.e., BEV and PHEV, simply referred to as electric vehicles in the following. 

Transportation by vessel, aircraft, tank truck, tank car, or other vehicle or terminal facilities used exclusively to transfer hazardous liquids between such modes of transportation. 

A critical safety issue of using diesel-ethanol blends relates to flashpoint and flammability. E-diesel blends containing 10-15% ethanol have the vapor pressure and flammability limits of ethanol. This means that ethanol concentrations in enclosed spaces such as fuel storage and vehicle fuel tanks are flammable over the temperature range 13-42 °C. Thus, there are higher risks of fire and explosion than with diesel fuel, or even gasoline. Other vehicle performance-related concerns are (a) a decreased maximum power (b) an increased incidence of fuel pump vapor lock and (c) a reduced fuel pump and fuel injector life due to the decreased lubricity of ethanol.

One place this problem has become especially severe is the nation s national park system. Visitors to national parks have found their enjoyment of the natural scenery compromised by poor air quality that leaves famous and noteworthy features only barely visible. For this reason, one section of the 1977 Amendments to the Clean Air Act provided for a program of monitoring and pollution control in the nation s 156 national parks and wilderness areas. Poor visibility resulting from high particulate concentration has safety effects also. Automobile drivers and airline pilots may find that they are able to see shorter distances and less clearly, increasing the likelihood of accidents involving other vehicles and aircraft. 

The launch of the space shuttle and other vehicles such as the Titan launch vehicles results in emissions directly into the troposphere and the stratosophere. Exhaust emissions include A1203 (30% by weight), CO (24%), HC1 (21%), H20 (10%), N2 (9%), C02 (4%), and H2 (2%) (Danilin, 1993). 

Because CNG is primarily methane, it is expected to have relatively low reactivity, with the small amounts of reactive impurities such as small olefins and alkanes being responsible for most of its reactivity (see Table 16.14). Emissions of CO are smaller than from gasoline-powered vehicles, while the effect on NOx emissions is not clear (National Research Council, 1991). As seen in Tables 16.10 and 16.11, CNG shows the highest promise for low-reactivity exhaust emissions, and this appears to be the case for its use in real vehicles (Gabele, 1995). Figure 16.40, for example, shows the estimated ozone production per mile traveled for a vehicle fueled on CNG compared to vehicles fueled on reformulated gasoline (RFG) or the alcohol fuels M85 or E85 (vide infra). These measurements and estimates based on them include the contributions from both exhaust (including CO) and evaporative emissions (Black et al., 1998). Clearly, the reactivity of the CNG-powered vehicle emissions was substantially smaller than for the other vehicle-fuel combinations. 

Rocket. An unmanned self-propelled vehicle, with or without warhead, designed to travel above the surface of the earth and whose trajectory or course, while in flight, cannot be controlled. Excludes Guided Missiles and other vehicles whose trajectory or course, while in flight, can be controlled remotely (Ref 40a, p 122)... 

Type 99 Armor-Penetration Land Mine was canvas disc 4.75" in diam 1.5" wide, filled with cast blocks of 50/50—RDX/TNT forming a circle. Four magnets were attached around the circumference, which were designed for attaching the mine to the side of a tank or other vehicle, (pp 206—07, Fig 154). Described in Ref. 7, p 181 as Magnetic Antitank Mine Model 99 (1939)... 

Coupled with normal electric motors, the systems can provide attractive power system alternatives for automobiles, tractors, trucks, aircraft, boats, ships, submarines, trains, and other vehicles, again without exhaust emissions, pollutants, or harmful waste products and without fuel costs.

A specific role is assigned to fuels to propel our cars, trucks, airplanes, and other vehicles. They are generally referred to as transportation fuels. The impact of the internal-combustion engine on our lives is fundamental. It allowed mankind to achieve mobility via easy means of transportation of persons and goods alike. In less than a century this revolution has transformed and eased our lives but at the same time raised new challenges. 

The crew compartment and many other vehicle fragments were eventually recovered from the ocean floor after a lengthy search and recovery operation. Although the exact timing of the death of the crew is unknown, several crew members are known to have survived the initial breakup of the spacecraft. However, the shuttle had no escape system and the astronauts did not survive the impact of the crew compartment with the ocean surface.
