The complex of Ni(II) and Co(II) with macrocyclic ligand cyclam (1,4,8,11 -tetraazacyclotetradecane) (5.3) has been shown to be particularly effective and selective catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO at mercury electrodes in water at potentials much less negative than those required for the uncatalyzed reduction . The ability of [Ni(cyclam)] + to serve as a catalyst precursor for the electroreduction of CO2 has prompted many studies. These studies have established the following [Pg.204]

The active catalyst is a form of Ni(cyclam)+ adsorbed on the surface of mercury electrodes .  [Pg.204]

Ni(cyclam)+ is adsorbed on mercury over an unusually wide range, including potentials that are much more positive than those where Ni(cyclam)+ is reduced to unadsorbed Ni(cyclam)+ .  [Pg.204]

A reasonable explanation for the fact that the adsorbed Ni(I) complex Ni(cyclam), but not the same complex in solution, is catalytically active towards the reduction of CO2 has been provided on the basis of theoretical calculations. The catalytic activity is severely diminished in the presence of CO on unstirred mercury electrodes and as CO is the primary product of the reduction. This behavior limits the long term effectiveness of the catalyst. It is proposed that the decrease in activity is due to Ni(cyclam)CO, an insoluble complex of Ni(0), which is formed during the reduction of C02 . Unfavorable shifts in the [Pg.204]

Equations (2.9), (2.10) and (2.11) are linear differential equations with constant coefficients. Note that the order of the differential equation is the order of the highest derivative. Systems described by such equations are called linear systems of the same order as the differential equation. For example, equation (2.9) describes a first-order linear system, equation (2.10) a second-order linear system and equation (2.11) a third-order linear system. [Pg.15]

As you pay homage to the diversity of behavior that emerges across the spectrum of all possible representations of all possible systems, you inevitably conclude that (1) there can be no objectively privileged system for which the emergent structures are real, and suc.h that all other structures, for all other derived systems, are less real, and (2) reality, or the emergence and identity of particular sets of objects and their interactions, is wholly dependent on the arbitrary dynamical labels that prescribe a particular system. In short, reality lo.ses its objectivity, and takes on a more tentative, ineffably relative facade. You begin to wonder if the best that you can do to get a hold on objective reality is to look for whatever remains fixed -i.e. what is universal - within the space of all possible representations, all possible rules, and all possible emergent structures. [Pg.702]

It is emphasized that drug activity is observed through a translation process controlled by cells. The aim of pharmacology is to derive system-independent constants characterizing drug activity from the indirect product of cellular response. [Pg.37]

In view of these potentials for major reductions in preservative efficacy, considerable effort has gone into attempts to devise equations in which one might substitute variously derived system parameters such as partition coefficients, surfactant and polymer binding constants and oil water ratios in order to obtain estimates of residual preservative levels in aqueous phases. Although some modestly successful predictions have been obtained for very simple laboratory systems, they have proved of limited practical value as data for many of the required parameters are unavailable for technical grade ingredients or for the more complex commercial systems. [Pg.367]

In the course of studying a large nnmber of examples where the side chains of the imidazol- and imidazolidin-2-ylidene were altered, several research groups found that NHCs bearing exclnsively alkyl side chains did not provide catalysts with better characteristics when compared to SIMes- and DVIes-derived systems 14 and 15. While Herrmann and co-workers showed that an unsaturated NHC bearing cyclohexyl wing tips conld be incorporated into a second-generation catalyst that was active in metathesis [20-23], more recent studies showed that similar complexes were either very difficult to prepare or were unstable and showed dramatically decreased catalytic properties [24-26] (complexes 17-19, Fig. 3.4). [Pg.67]

In situ derived systems, in general, performed similarly to preformed complexes, in telomerisation of butadiene with MeOH, Tables 4.1 and 4.2 [68,70,71,77,78], In situ systans may be generated from free NHC or from imidazolium salt in combination with an appropriate Pd(0) or Pd(ll) source. Typically, 2-4 equivalents of imidazolium salt relative to Pd have been nsed [68,70,77], In situ catalysts derived from mono- and bis-Fc-snbstituted (Fc = ferrocenyl) imidazohnm and benzimidazolium salts (64-68) (Table 4.2) showed interesting telomerisation activities ascribed to the steric bulk of the Fc substituents [70]. Unsymmetrical salts 65 and 66 bearing A -Fc and A -Me... [Pg.123]

By employing anionic techniques, alkyl methacrylate containing block copolymer systems have been synthesized with controlled compositions, predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Subsequent hydrolysis of the ester functionality to the metal carboxylate or carboxylic acid can be achieved either by potassium superoxide or the acid catalyzed hydrolysis of t-butyl methacrylate blocks. The presence of acid and ion groups has a profound effect on the solution and bulk mechanical behavior of the derived systems. The synthesis and characterization of various substituted styrene and all-acrylic block copolymer precursors with alkyl methacrylates will be discussed. [Pg.258]

Polyalphaolefin Hydraulic Fluids. Because no chronic-duration human or animal inhalation, oral, or dermal exposure studies using polyalphaolefin hydraulic fluids were located, chronic-duration inhalation or oral MRLs could not be derived. Systemic toxicity studies in which animals were exposed via inhalation, oral, and dermal routes would be useful in identifying the end points of toxicity for humans living at or near hazardous waste sites and exposed for chronic durations. Further carcinogenicity studies on individual organophosphate ester components of hydraulic fluids maybe useful. [Pg.242]

We could account for our result by the same mechanism, if the Cp2NbH3-derived system also contains (or generates) a species capable of catalyzing the hydrogenation of ethylene to ethane. [Pg.258]

The results obtained with this approach are quite impressive. Large rate accelerations (kcat/kuncat = 3 X 104) were observed with the best of the catalysts. A comparison between the best catalyst and a catalytic antibody system designed for phosphomonoester hydrolysis is reported. The combinatorial derived system gives an observed rate constant that is five times larger than that reported for the antibody system. In a control experiment, it was determined that polymers with just one type of carboxylic acid attached did not have catalytic activity. It... [Pg.465]

Thus, data presented above show that only one Zr and one N center of complex A1 are used in the initial reaction with H2 one H atom is bound to the N2 molecule, and the second H atom is wasted by forming a bond with Zr. The other N and Zr centers seem to be still available for a second H-H bond activation process. Therefore, the question can be asked whether the addition of a second molecule of H2 to complex At would be feasible. In order to answer to this question, we have studied the mechanism of the addition of a second molecule of hydrogen to the previously derived systems. The complexes that can serve as initial reactants for a second H2 addition reaction are A3 and A7 described above, which are located "before" the higher barrier walls that connect to A13 and A17. We have, therefore, carried out a computational experiment to explore the reaction paths for the A3 + H2 and A7 + H2 reactions. [Pg.341]

Similar to anhydride-bearing polymers, the synthesis of a poly(norborn-2-en-5-yl-methanol)-derived system, polymerized by a Gmbbs catalyst after scavenging excess of reagent, was reported by Hanson (Tab. 8.3) [42, 43]. [Pg.354]

The steric course at the Li-bearing center has been investigated nsing an enantiomer-ically enriched ethynylvinylmethanol-derived system. A reaction of ether 97 (78% ee) with n-BuLi gave [l,4]-prodnct ketone 98 only in the racemic form (equation 55 f. This lack of stereospecificity is partly due to racemization of the a-oxyafkyllithium and partly due to the [1,4]-rearrangement pathway. [Pg.778]

PUs are also widely used as coating materials sold as finished polymers, two-part systems, and prepolymer systems. Water-based PU systems are now available allowing easy home use. Aromatic diisocyanate-derived coatings generally offer poor external light stability while aliphatic-derived systems offer good light stability. [Pg.112]

In view of the above, it is not surprising that significant efforts have been dedicated to the problem of generating synthetic chloride receptors. Indeed, a number of such systems are known. Unfortunately, many of them are hydrophilic polycations and, accordingly, suffer from low solubility in organic media. " " Others are metal- or metalloid-derived systems. The clinical utility of these is clouded by metal toxicity. ° The sapphyrins, being both wholly organic and... [Pg.112]

In these equations /,- are the components of the volumetric body forces in the i coordinate direction. At this point the stresses are still written as r. The next step is to use the stress-strain-rate expressions developed in Chapter 2 to write the stresses in terms of the velocities, thus deriving systems of equations in which the velocities are the dependent variables. [Pg.80]

The Co-derived system constitutes a distinctly less efficient HAT reagent than CpCr(CO)3H and can also be used in kinetically less favored radical addition reactions, such as additions to oximes, and even dimerizations of benzylic radicals as shown in Scheme 10 [31, 32]. [Pg.102]

It should be noted that while enyne metathesis is considered incompatible with molybdenum catalyst 1, ruthenium catalysts other than the Grubbs type also promote the reaction. Semeril et al. [103] reported efficient enyne RCM with a catalyst conveniently generated in situ from [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2,1,3-bis(mesityl)imidazolium chloride and caesium carbonate. Interestingly the authors found that the in situ derived system gave better results than the isolated catalyst. One of the most impressive examples of the use of enyne RCM is the total synthesis of (-)-longithorone by Layton et al. [104]. Inspired by a pro-... [Pg.110]
