Ordinances, chemical plant

Industrial Wastewater Treatment. Industrial wastewaters require different treatments depending on their sources. Plating waste contains toxic metals that are precipitated and insolubiHzed with lime (see Electroplating). Iron and other heavy metals are also precipitated from waste-pidde Hquor, which requires acid neutralization. Akin to pickle Hquor is the concentrated sulfuric acid waste, high in iron, that accumulates in smokeless powder ordinance and chemical plants. Lime is also useful in clarifying wastes from textile dyeworks and paper pulp mills and a wide variety of other wastes. Effluents from active and abandoned coal mines also have a high sulfuric acid and iron oxide content because of the presence of pyrite in coal. [Pg.178]

The complexity of the bacterial cell (for example) is thus a match for any chemical plant in the power and sophistication of its chemistry. Inside every cell there is a controlled environment in which several thousand catalysed reactions occur and where their products and reactants may be found. Cells also contain the control systems to match, and a store of information to co-ordinate and reproduce the whole system. All of these activities take place at relatively mild temperatures and pressures and, overall, these reaction processes make up the metabolism of the cells. [Pg.255]

In general, the following items are considered vital in plant location proximity to market, raw materials, transportation, labor supply, water supply, power supply, economic interrelation with other industries, and specific plant requirements. There are other plant and process location matters that are of real importance to, and exist as real responsibilities of, the chemical plant design engineer of commercial plants for the manufacture of chemicals and chemical formulations, such as land, local ordinances, public improvements, utilities, waste disposal, and climatic conditions. All the factors that enter into the problem of plant or industry location also affect the choice of local sites and must be considered by the design engineer (see Chap. 7). [Pg.28]

British Columbia, and three at the U.S. Army Ordinance Works operated by the DuPont Company at Morgantown, West Virginia Cluldersburg, Alabama and Dana, Indiana. The plant at Trail used chemical exchange between hydrogen gas and steam for the initial isotope separation followed by electrolysis for final concentration. The three plants in the United States used vacuum distillation of water for the initial separation followed by electrolysis. Details of these plants and their operations may be found in the Hterature (10). [Pg.3]

Indicate which type of measurement scale (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio) is usually used for the following characteristics time, mass, library holdings, gender, type of heart attack, cholesterol level as measured by a clinical chemical laboratory, cholesterol level as reported by a doctor to a patient, pipet volume, and leaves on a plant. [Pg.23]

As management of legislation on consumer and industrial chemicals, biocides and plant protection products has much in common, countries may find it advantageous to aspire to a high degree of co-ordination between these areas. [Pg.294]

Qualified scientific assessments of hazards and risks can be made by scientific institutions at universities or institutes contracted to provide assistance. As hazard and risk assessments of, for example, industrial chemicals, consumer chemicals, biocides and plant protection products have much in common, it would be cost efficient to co-ordinate and concentrate scientific support in order to avoid a thinning out of resources and expertise. [Pg.296]

In addition to tetra- up to hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins/furans with chlorine atoms at positions 2, 3, 7, 8 (8 substances transferred from the Ordinance on Dangerous Substances, App. V,3), the amendment of 6th July 1994 extends the number of congeners of this type by some additional penta- up to octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins/furans. Now the total number of restricted chlorinated PCDD/PCDF-Congeners amounts to 17 substances. The threshold concentrations for these chemicals in substances preparations and products were decreased considerably, depending on their toxic potentials. However, plant treatment agents, intermediates, and a few more products were excluded from this regulation. [Pg.130]
