Oils and Solvents

The part may need to be in contact with service fluids such as mineral and vegetable based oils. The selection of the correct polymer depends on the exact nature of the fluid and the service temperature. For mineral oils a polychloroprene or acrylonitrile -butadiene copolymer based compound may be appropriate but small variations in lubricant constituents make it worthwhile to measure the changes that can occur at operating temperatures to properties such as modulus and tear resistance. For solvents it may be more viable to use a physical sheath of an impervious material such as polytetrafluoroethylene. Swelling or shrinkage is strongly influenced by the nature of fillers and oils used to compound the rubber. [Pg.7]


A mixed polymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile (Perbunan, Hycar, Chemigum) may be vulcanised like rubber and possesses good resistance to oils and solvents in general. [Pg.1016]

Natural Products. Various methods have been and continue to be employed to obtain useful materials from various parts of plants. Essences from plants are obtained by distillation (often with steam), direct expression (pressing), collection of exudates, enfleurage (extraction with fats or oils), and solvent extraction. Solvents used include typical chemical solvents such as alcohols and hydrocarbons. Liquid (supercritical) carbon dioxide has come into commercial use in the 1990s as an extractant to produce perfume materials. The principal forms of natural perfume ingredients are defined as follows the methods used to prepare them are described in somewhat general terms because they vary for each product and suppHer. Vehicles. The soHd pigments are dispersed iato the ink vehicle, which consists of a combination of resia, oil, and solvent. The solvent is absorbed by the paper, leaving a partially dry ink film of resia and oil that biads the pigment to the paper. This film then hardens by oxidation. Oxidation of the vehicle is aided by varnish driers, ie, metallic salts. Cobalt driers are considered the most effective (see Driers and metallic soaps). [Pg.55]

Isopropa.nola.mines. Reaction of propylene oxide with ammonia yields mono-, di-, and triisopropanolamines. These products find use as soluble oils and solvents, emulsifiers, waterless hand cleaners, cosmetics, cleaners, and detergents. Nittile mbber is much like SBR in its physical properties. It can be compounded for physical strength and abrasion resistance using traditional fillers such as carbon black, siUca, and reinforcing clays. The primary benefit of the polymer is its oil and solvent resistance. At a medium ACN content of 34% the swell in IRM 903 oil at 70°C is typically 25—30%. Nitrile mbber processes on conventional mbber equipment and can be compression, transfer, or injection molded. It can also be extmded easily. [Pg.232]

Vinyl Acetate—Ethylene Copolymers. In these random copolymers, the ratio of ethylene to vinyl acetate (EVA) is varied from 30—60%. As the vinyl acetate content increases, the oil and heat resistance increases. With higher ethylene content the physical strength, tensile, and tear increases. The polymers are cured with peroxide. The main properties of these elastomers include heat resistance, moderate oil and solvent resistance, low compression set, good weather resistance, high damping, exceUent o2one resistance, and they can be easily colored (see Vinyl polymers, poly(VINYL acetate)). [Pg.234]

Oxidized castor oils are excellent nonmigrating, nonvolatile plasticizers (qv) for ceUulosic resins, poly(vinyl butyral), polyamides, shellac, and natural and synthetic mbber (see Rubber, natural). The high viscosity products are also used as tackifiers in gasket compounds and adhesives (qv) because of good oil and solvent resistance. Poly(butadiene- (9-acrylonitrile) [9008-18-3] NBR (64), is another commercially significant random copolymer. This mbber is manufactured by free-radical emulsion polymerization. Important producers include Copolymer Rubber and Chemical (Nysyn), B. F. Goodrich (Hycar), Goodyear (Chemigum), and Uninoyal (Paracdl). The total U.S. production of nitrile mbber (NBR) in 1990 was 95.6 t (65). The most important property of NBR mbber is its oil resistance. Silicone rubbers find use because of their excellent thermal and electrical properties, their physiological inertness and their low compression set. In order to understand the relationship between the mixture component, physical properties and consumer acceptance of the lipstick, various lipstick formulations have to be produced. The physical properties of each formulation should be studied. The consumer acceptance towards the product also should be investigated. However, only a part of this work will be discussed in this paper. Here, natural waxes, oils and solvent have been used to produce natural ingredient based lipstick formulations based on the formulation suggested by the statistical mixture design.
