Alkaline cleaners are available which allow the separation of excess oily soil from the cleaner. These formulations involve the use of surfactants that are good detergents but poor emulsifiers. Agitation of the bath during the work shift causes a temporary emulsification, which keeps the soil in suspension. After a prolonged period of inactivity (usually overnight), the oily soils float to the surface where they are skimmed off. This method is quite effective with mineral oil-type soils but is less so with fatty oils. [Pg.40]

WARCO 751 emulsion is a highly effective mineral oil type product designed to give foam control during high temperature jet dye cycles including cool-down and depressurization. [Pg.543]

Both polystyrene samples contained an ester and a mineral oil type of lubricant together with a phenolic antioxidant. The lubricants have little absorption in the 280-300 nm region and do not interfere in either method of analysis at the 5-10% concentrations at which they are used in polystyrene formulations. The absorption spectrum of the phenolic antioxidant, however, shows a sharply decreasing non-linear absorbance in the 280-300 nm region and contributes significantly to the background absorption of the test solution in the direct UV spectroscopic method. This invalidates the baseline correction procedure and leads to erroneous styrene monomer values. In the distillation procedure, however, the test solution used for spectroscopy does not contain the phenolic antioxidant and there is no interference in the determination of styrene monomer. [Pg.104]

Brilliantines The primary purpose of brilliantines is to add a level of grooming and to impart sheen attributes to hair. Historically, the main constituent of brilliantines is an oil, usually a mineral oil type, in a rather high concentration in liquid brilliantines, the concentration of oil can mn from 80% to 100% in the formula. Brilliantine action on hair is due to formation of a thin-film coating on the strands of hair fibers the oil is not absorbed. [Pg.95]

Although the black inks are predominantly based on mineral oil, colors are almost entirely formulated with a soya bean oil vehicle. The superior printabHity of colors and economics of blacks guide the selection of product types by the market. Recently developed low mb blacks offer smudge-resistant print. Their share of the market is growing rapidly. The low mb characteristics of these inks are produced through the use of low stmcture carbon black. To overcome these difficulties, drilling fluids are treated with a variety of mud lubricants available from various suppHers. They are mostly general-purpose, low toxicity, nonfluorescent types that are blends of several anionic or nonionic surfactants and products such as glycols and glycerols, fatty acid esters, synthetic hydrocarbons, and vegetable oil derivatives. Extreme pressure lubricants containing sulfurized or sulfonated derivatives of natural fatty acid products or petroleum-base hydrocarbons can be quite toxic to marine life and are rarely used for environmental reasons. AH glass capillary viscometers should be caUbrated carefully (21). The standard method is to determine the efflux time of distilled water at 20°C. Unfortunately, because of its low viscosity, water can be used only to standardize small capillary instmments. However, a caUbrated viscometer can be used to determine the viscosity of a higher viscosity Hquid, such as a mineral oil. This oil can then be used to caUbrate a viscometer with a larger capillary. Another method is to caUbrate directly with two or more certified standard oils differing in viscosity by a factor of approximately five. Such oils are useful for cahbrating virtually all types of viscometers. Because viscosity is temperature-dependent, particularly in the case of standard oils, temperature control must be extremely good for accurate caUbration. [Pg.181]

Emulsions of fatty- and petroleum-based substances, both oils and waxes, of the o/w type are made by using blends of sorbitan fatty esters and their poly(oxyethylene) derivatives. Mixtures of poly(oxyethylene(20)) sorbitan monostearate (Polysorbate 60) and sorbitan monostearate are typical examples of blends used for lotions and creams. Both sorbitan fatty acid esters and their poly(oxyethylene) derivatives are particularly advantageous in cosmetic uses because of their very low skin irritant properties. Sorbitan fatty ester emulsifiers for w/o emulsions of mineral oil are used in hair preparations of both the lotion and cream type. Poly(oxyethylene(20)) sorbitan monolaurate is useflil in shampoo formulations (see Hairpreparations). Poly(oxyethylene) sorbitan surfactants are also used for solubilization of essential oils in the preparation of colognes and after-shave lotions. [Pg.54]

For gas turbines, especially the more advanced high-temperature gas turbines, the oil of choice should be synthetic oil, since synthetic oils have a high flash point. Gas turbine lubrication systems should be run for about 20 minutes after shutdown since maximum temperatures are reached after 10 minutes of shutdown especially in the bearing area. Most gas turbines are also on turning gear to avoid sagging in the shaft. Mineral oils can be used for the compressor. It is not uncommon to have two types of oil in a petrochemical plant. Mineral oil costs much less than the synthetic oil. [Pg.549]

This type of lubrication provides the answer to why many mechanisms operate under conditions that are beyond the limits forecast by theory. It was previously thought that increasing pressure reduced oil film thickness until the aspirates broke through, causing metal-to-metal contact. Research has shown, however, that the effect on mineral oil of high contact pressure is a large increase in the viscosity of the lubricant. This viscosity increase combined with the elasticity of the metal causes the oil film to act like a thin solid film, thus preventing metal-to-metal contact. [Pg.845]

Mostly, 75% of the extender oils are used in the tread, sub tread, and shoulder regions of a tire. About 10%-15% are used in the sidewall, 5% are used in the inner finer, and less than 10% are used in the remaining parts. A typical tire can contain up to 700 g of oil. In the pharmaceutical field, agar is commonly the base colloid for stabilizing mineral oil in water emulsions, used for laxative purposes. The concentration of agar is kept below the gel point, so that the emulsion will pour. Other gums, like tragacanth, Irish moss extract, or carboxymethylcellulose, may replace the agar, where desired. Usually, from 0.5 to 0.8% of the gum, based upon the weight of the aqueous phase, suffices to protect this type of emulsion, which is somewhat of a neutral variety. [Pg.8]

Three basic types of air filter are used viscous, dry and continuous. Viscous and dry units are similar in construction, but the filter medium of the viscous type is coated with a viscous material, such as a mineral oil, to retain the dust. The filters are made up from standard, preformed, sections, supported on a frame in a filter housing. The sections are removed periodically for cleaning or replacement. Various designs of continuous filtration equipment are also available, employing either viscous or dry filter elements, but in which the filter is cleaned continuously. Some hydraulic fluids have a bland oily smell, while others have no smell. Mineral oil and polyalphaolefin hydraulic fluids are mixtures that have oil in them and will bum. Oil-in-water hydraulic fluids (a special type of mineral oil hydraulic fluid) do not bum because they contain water. Organophosphate ester hydraulic fluids are mostly made without oil and will not bum unless there is a flame directly on them once the flame is removed, these fluids will stop burning. Because they do not bum, organophosphate ester hydraulic fluids are used in airplanes and other places where fires are very undesirable. [Pg.15]
