Composite structures fabrication requires levels and types of expertise for layup and curing that are not typically found in metals fabrication industries. Therefore, a composite structure is more of a specialist-produced structure than is a metallic structure. Layup is a totally different process that is absolutely foreign to metals production technologists. We must somehow get those people into the mainstream of composite structures manufacturing before we will see widespread composite structures production. 

Reuse of waste metals generated from metal fabrication and from discarded products (scrap) can save large amounts of energy, particularly for metals that have high energy use in production, such as aluminum. The low fractions of energy used to produce metals from scrap for aluminum, certain sources of copper, and nickel show the value of recycling these metals.

Electrodeposition This method of paint application is basically a dipping process. The paint is water-based and is either an emulsion or a stabilised dispersion. The solids of the paint are usually very low and the viscosity lower than that used in conventional dipping. The workpiece is made one electrode, usually the cathode, in a d.c. circuit and the anode can be either the tank itself or suitably sized electrodes sited to give optimum coating conditions. The current is applied for a few minutes and after withdrawal and draining the article is rinsed with de-ionised water to remove the thin layer of dipped paint. The deposited film is firmly adherent and contains a minimum of water and can be stoved without any flash-off period. This process is used for metal fabrications, notably car bodies. Complete coverage of inaccessible areas can be achieved and the corrosion resistance of the coating is excellent (Fig. 14.1). 

Rocky Flats is a Government-owned and contractor-operated facility which originated in 1952. The plant s primary missions are metal fabrication, assembly, and chemical processing—with emphasis on production-related research and development. Chemical processing activities involve the recovery of plutonium from Rocky Flats Plant scrap, waste materials and residues, and effluent streams. The final product of this recovery and purification effort is high-purity plutonium metal for use in foundry operations.

In addition to the above subcategories, porcelain enameling on continuous strip is a subdivision within this industry. However, because there are only two plants in the U.S. producing this product, a separate subcategory is not necessary. These plants start with coils of steel, aluminum, or aluminized steel, porcelain enamel them and either recoil them for sale to metal fabricators or shear them into pieces for use as architectural panels or chalkboards. The estimated production was 2.0 x 106 m2 (22 x 106 ft2). This figure represents the area of enamel applied. For multiple coats, the area for each coat is considered.

EPM and EPDM are not oil resistant, and are swollen by aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated solvents. They have excellent electrical properties and stability to radiation. Their densities are the lowest of the synthetics, and they are capable of accepting large quantities of filler and oil. They exhibit poor tack, and even if tackifiers are added, it still is not ideal for building operations. Adhesion to metal, fabrics and other materials, can be difficult to accomplish. 

As in other metal fabricating techniques, the temp of the metal is of importance, although most of the work to date has been conducted at ambient temp... 

Another alternative would be to visit an automotive repair shop. Internal combustion engines, lifts, levers, and hand tools are only a few of the types of mechanical devices you could see in use. Yet another possibility would be to visit a local manufacturer in your town. Examples include a foundry, a sheet metal fabricator, an automotive manufacturer, or a pump manufacturer. Look in the phone book under manufacturing for possibilities. 

Exposure to residual chloroprene monomer in polychloroprene latex and polymer has also been described. In 1977, mean airbome concentrations of chloroprene of up to 0.2 ppm [0.72 mg/m3] were reported in a roll building area at a metal fabricating plant in the United States where polychloroprene was applied extensively to metal cylinders before vulcanization (Infante, 1977). Workers in a Russian shoe factory were reportedly often exposed to chloroprene concentrations of 20-25 mg/m (Buyanov Svishchcv, 1973). 

Fabricated parts can be machined with standard wood or metal fabricating machines (13). 

Parts cleaning and stripping are integral process operations for industries that repair, maintain, or manufacture parts and equipment. Manufacturing groups generating metal wastes include metal furniture manufacturers, metal fabricators, machinery manufacturers, electric and electronic equipment manufacturers, instrument manufacturers, and many others.
