In recent years much attention has been paid to the use of explosives for the shaping and working of metals. Figure 14.12 illustrates a simple application of the process for forming a dished end of a vessel. A flat metal blank is placed over a suitable mould and the space between them evacuated. For some types of explosive working of metals, plastic sheet explosives EL-506 were developed by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Inc. 

Among various applications of explosives to engineering work such as tunnel and road building, water front, harbour and river regulation etc., explosive working of metals was recently added to the list of peaceful uses of explosives [97].

We can easily predict that cascade and sequential catalytic reactions will be the subject of important investigations not only by promoting the cooperation of several metal catalysts but also by organizing the tolerance and the cooperative work of metal and organo catalysts, and of metal and enzyme catalysts. This will be possible through a deep understanding of the mechanisms of each catalytic system, so as to organize their mutual tolerance. 

A low rate of detonation is required for most operations connected with explosive working of metals. It is usually achieved by mixing explosives marked for their ease of detonation (such as PETN, Cyclonite) with a relatively large quantity of such oxygen carriers as NaNOa, KNO3, Ba(NOa)2. 

Plastic explosives arc particularly suitable for the working of metals.
