New machinery purchased by any member state must comply with the requirements of the Machinery Directive as evidenced by the CE mark on the equipment together with supporting documentation (technical file). This applies whether a machine is purchased from a UK manufacturer or imported from another EU member state. For machinery imported from a non-EU Member State, the importer is responsible for ensuring the machine has been manufactured to EU requirements and is accompanied by the appropriate documentation (technical file). [Pg.170]

These Regulations, which incorporate the contents of the Machinery Directive, lay down the requirements to be met by the manufacturers of new machinery, i.e. machinery which is currently being put on the market, and indicate what a purchaser of a new machine, whether manufactured in the UK or elsewhere in the EU, can expect by way of safeguards on the machine and information about it from the supporting documentation. Their aim is to ensure that the machinery meets tire standards necessary to ensure safety in use. Where machinery conforms with the requirements of the Regulations (and hence the directive) it will have open access to the whole of the EU market. Compliance with these conditions is also required of machinery imported into the EU. However, the requirements do not apply to machinery that is to be exported to non- EU cormtries. [Pg.705]

The scope of the directive covers the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0,5 bar. A pressure equipment in the sense of the directive is any vessel, piping, safety accessory or pressure accessory. An assembly means several pieces of pressure equipment assembled by a manufacturer to constitute an integrated and functional whole. It is important to be aware that the directive relates exclusively to the pressure risk and that therefore other directives, such as for machinery, low voltage may be applicable to the equipment concerned. [Pg.941]

An extremely important safety issue with respect to ah. wood product manufacturing processes is personal worker safety. Ah of the processes use much moving machinery, usuahy including many saws or knives. Workers must continuahy remember the inherent dangers these machines involve as weh as other possible dangerous situations which could result from malfunctions or other errors. From 1910 onward waste filament yam had been chopped into short lengths suitable for use on the machinery designed to process cotton and wool staples into spun yams. In the 1930s new plants were built specifically to supply the staple fiber markets. During World War II the production of staple matched that of filament, and by 1950, staple viscose was the most important product. The new spun-yam oudets spawned a series of viscose developments aimed at matching the characteristics of wool and cotton more closely. Viscose rayon was, after all, silk-like. Compared with wool it lacked bulk, residence, and abrasion resistance. Compared to cotton, it was weaker, tended to shrink and crease more easily, and had a rather lean, limp hand. [Pg.345]

Density is a particularly important characteristic of alloys used in rotating machinery, because centrifugal stresses increase with density. Densities of the various metals in Table 1 range from 6.1 to 19.3 g/cm. Those of iron, nickel, and cobalt-base superaHoys fall in the range 7-8.5 g/cm.
