Hand lay-up (contact molding) method was used for preparation of jute/polyester composite laminates. 1.5% catalyst (MEKP) and 1.5% accelerator (eobalt naphthenate) was used for room temperature cure of isophthalic polyester resin. Filler (eal-cium carbonate) was added up to 40% by weight of resin. Fiber eontent in eomposite... [Pg.126]

In this chapter, the effect of fabric treatment and filler addition on mechanical performance and moisture absorption of jute/polyester composites is investigated. Alkali and thermal treatments were carried out on commercially available whole fabrics. Jute fabric/polyester composites with calcimn carbonate filler find many low cost applications. [Pg.128]

The surface energy of fibers is closely related to the hydrophilicity of the fiber [6]. Some investigations are concerned with methods to decrease the hydrophilicity. The modification of wood-cellulose fibers with stearic acid [10] hydrophobizes those fibers and improves their dispersion in polypropylene. As can be observed in jute reinforced polyester composites, treatment with polyvinylacetate increases the mechanical properties [10] and moisture repel-lence [60]. Several similar investigations on biobased composites based on thermoplastic and thermoset matrices have been reported by several authors [61-63]. Some of the major findings based on the authors own experimental investigations are discussed in the following sections. [Pg.237]

Daimler Chrysler has been increasing its research and development in flax-reinforced polyester composites for exterior applications for a number of years now [80]. Mercedes also used jute-based door panels in its E-class vehicles in 1996 [81]. Cotton fibres embedded in polyester matrix were used in the body of the East German Trabant car [82]. Some other applications are on Mercedes A and S class mamade from different bio-fibre-reinforced composites [83], Lotus manufactured Eco Elise bodyworks which contains hemp fibres, while sisal fibres are used for interior trimmings while the inner door panels for the BMW 7 Series contain 70% of sisal fibres. Plant fibre-reinforced polylactic acid composites with improved rigidity and reduced processing times have been applied in the Toyota Lexus HS250h hybrid vehicle recently. [Pg.694]

O Dell [84] studied the weathering properties of jute fiber/unsaturated polyester composites and compared them with glass fiber/unsaturated polyester composites. Samples were exposed to cycles of continuous UV exposure for 102 min, followed by 18 min of water spray for a total of 1200 hours. It was noted that there were no observable visual differences between weathered glass and jute fiber specimens in color changes or surface erosion effects. [Pg.360]
