C. Further warming to 65°C forms white iron sulfate monohydrate [17375-41 -6], FeSO H2O, which is stable to 300°C. Strong beating results in decomposition with loss of sulfur dioxide. Solutions of iron(II) sulfate reduce nitrate and nitrite to nitric oxide, whereupon the highly colored [Fe(H20) (N0)] ion is formed. This reaction is the basis of the brown ring text for the quaUtative deterrnination of nitrate or nitrite. [Pg.438]

Plants can also be pests that need to be controlled, particulady noxious weeds infesting food crops. Prior to 1900, inorganic compounds such as sulfuric acid, copper nitrate, sodium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and potassium salts were used to selectively control mustards and other broadleaved weeds in cereal grains. By the early 1900s, Kainite and calcium cyanamid were also used in monocotyledenous crops, as well as iron sulfate, copper sulfate, and sodium arsenate. Prom 1915 to 1925, acid arsenical sprays, carbon bisulfate, sodium chlorate, and others were introduced for weed control use. Total or nonselective herbicides kill all vegetation, whereas selective compounds control weeds without adversely affecting the growth of the crop (see Herbicides). [Pg.141]

The cake produced by the digestion is extracted with cold water and possibly with some diluted acids from the subsequent processes. During the cake dissolution it is necessary to maintain the temperature close to 65°C, the temperature of iron sulfate maximum solubiUty. To prevent the reoxidation of the Fe " ions during processing, a small amount of Ti " is prepared in the system by the Ti reduction. The titanium extract, a solution of titanium oxo-sulfate, iron sulfate, and sulfuric acid, is filtered off. Coagulation agents are usually added to the extract to faciUtate the separation of insoluble sludge. [Pg.8]

The main impurity of the filtrate is the iron(II) sulfate which can be crystallized as the heptahydrate, FeS04-7H2 O, by cooling the solution to a temperature below 15°C. This process is most often carried out in vacuum crystallizers. The crystals of iron sulfate are separated by centrifugation or filtration (qv). To prevent premature hydrolysis of titanium dioxide, the temperature of the above processes should not exceed 70°C. [Pg.8]

Synthetic Iron Oxides. Iron oxide pigments have been prepared synthetically since the end of the seventeenth century. The first synthetic red iron oxide was obtained as a by-product of the production of sulfuric acid from iron sulfate containing slate. Later, iron oxide pigments were produced direcdy by the thermal decomposition of iron sulfates. In the 1990s, about 70% of all iron oxide pigments consumed are prepared synthetically. [Pg.11]

The resultant slag, a complex mixture of titanates, may contain 70—85% Ti02- The slag route is particularly useful when ilmenite is closely associated with haematite, from which it cannot economically be separated mechanically. The dry powder process has several additional advantages over the wet process. For example, much less waste of enamel occurs because the dry over-spray is airborne and recycled in a closed system.
