Chrome green

Also called channel black and furnace black. Chrome green.

Chrome green is produced by mechanically mixing chrome yellow and iron blue pigments in water. An iron blue, [Fe(NH4) (FeCN6)], is an oxidized precipitate product of the reaction between an aqueous solution of iron sulfate and ammonium sulfate with sodium hexacyanoferrate.

Various compounds of chromium exhibit vivid colors, such as red, chrome green, and chromate yellow, all used as pigments.

After being cooled to room temperature the reaction mixture is poured into an equal volume of water and chilled to 10° in an ice bath. The crude precipitate is separated by suction filtration and thoroughly washed with cold water until the washings no longer show any chrome green color. The precipitate is triturated with three 300-ml. portions of boiling water and filtered to remove the diphenic acid formed in the reaction. The precipitate is then triturated with several (4-6) 300-ml. portions of hot 40% sodium... 

Sesquioxide of Chromium—chrome green—Cr, 0 — is generally prepared for potters use by calcining a mixture of equal parte of chromate of potessa and sulphur in a close earthenware crucible at a Ted heat, the green moss which is produced being well washed to dissolve out the sulphate and sulphide of potassium. The oxide of chromium which remains ia further purified by repeated elutriation.

Lead chromates, lead molybdates, chrome greens, and fast chrome greens are supplied as pigment powders, low-dust or dust-free preparations, or as pastes. For standard specifications, see Table 1. 

Chrome green and fast chrome green mixed pigments are produced by combining chrome yellow with iron blue or phthalocyanine blue (see p. 121). 

Chrome greens, C.I. Pigment Green 15 77510 and 77600, are combined or mixed pigments of chrome yellow (see Section 3.4.1 and iron blue (see Section 3.6) with the formula... 

The density and refractive index of the chrome greens and fast chrome greens depend on the ratio of the components of the mixture. Their hues vary from light green to dark blue-green, again depending on the ratio of the components. 

Production. Chrome green and fast chrome green pigments can be prepared by dry or wet mixing. 

Pigment Industry. The importance of iron blue in the production of chrome green and zinc green pigments has greatly increased worldwide (see Section 3.4.4).
