Iron white

C. Further warming to 65°C forms white iron sulfate monohydrate [17375-41 -6], FeSO H2O, which is stable to 300°C. Strong beating results in decomposition with loss of sulfur dioxide. Solutions of iron(II) sulfate reduce nitrate and nitrite to nitric oxide, whereupon the highly colored [Fe(H20) (N0)] ion is formed. This reaction is the basis of the brown ring text for the quaUtative deterrnination of nitrate or nitrite. 

There are two basic types of cast iron white, and grey. The phases in white iron are a and FejC, and it is the large volume fraction of FejC that makes the metal brittle. The name comes from the silvery appearance of the fracture surface, due to light being reflected from cleavage planes in the FejC. In grey iron much of the carbon separates... 

This type of cast iron is made by high-temperature heat treatment of white iron castings. The mechanical properties of malleable cast irons are given in Table 3.1 usually they are applied to the fabrication of conveyor chain links, pipe fittings and gears.

No. 5, or what is termed white-iron—sometimes silver-iron—is very seldom used in the foundry it is very brittle, and does not run into tho moulds, being difficult to keep in fusion. 

In gray iron, most of the contained carbon is in the form of graphite flakes, dispersed throughout the iron. In ductile iron, the major form of contained carbon is graphite spheres, which are visible as dots on a ground surface. In white iron, practically all contained carbon is combined with iron as iron carbide (cementite). a very hard material. In malleable iron, the carbon is present as graphite nodules. High-alloy irons usually contain an alloy content in excess of 3%.
