High-pressure environment applications

The rate of sampling with piezoelectric sensors is limited by their physical characteristics and present technology to the millisecond range for applications in the liquid phase. The technique is versatile in that it can be used in a variety of locations. The solid state electronics necessary to operate the piezoelectric sensor are easily miniaturized, and data can be recorded continuously or periodically. A small computer with a reasonable memory could easily record data over long times. There may be some problems in deep-sea locations, simply because of the complications in packaging the sensor for high-pressure environments, although this problem may be surmountable. [Pg.66]

Vertical Pressure Leaf Filters are essentially the same as Horizontal Plate Filters except for the orientation of the filter elements which are vertical rather than horizontal. They are applied for the polishing slurries with very lov solids content of 1-5% or for cake filtration with a solids concentration of 20-25%. As with the horizontal plate filter the vertical leaf filters are also well suited for handling flammable, toxic and corrosive materials since they are autoclaved and designed for hazardous environments when high pressure and safe operation are required. Likewise, they may be readily jacketed for applications whenever hot or cold temperatures are to be preserved.The largest leaf filters in horizontal vessels have a filtration area of 300 m and vertical vessels 100 m both designed for an operating pressure of 6 bar. [Pg.196]

Although transformers suitable for other industrial installations are generally suitable for producing applications, certain options may be desirable— primarily due to environmental considerations. At locations subject to harsh environmental conditions, and particularly at locations subject to washdown with high-pressure hoses, non-ventilated enclosures are desirable, if not necessary. Likewise, at locations subjected to salt water and salt-laden air, it often is desirable to specify copper windings and lead wires. Most manufacturers provide standard units with aluminum windings and lead wires. Even if aluminum coils are used, it is almost always desirable to require stranded copper lead wires. This will lessen corrosion and loose terminal problems when transformers arc interconnected to the facility electrical system with copper conductors. If the transformers are to be installed outdoors in corrosive environments, cases should be of corrosion-resistant material (e.g., stainless steel) or be provided with an exterior coating suitable for the location. [Pg.541]

Ammonium nitrate (AN) was considered early as an environment-friendly alternative to AP but its multiple crystal phase-transitions at low temperatures and its poor performance precluded its use. The nitramine-based propellants are also likely to emerge as potential eco-friendly propellants as the combustion products are non-toxic and non-smoky, although the present day nitramine propellants do not match the high performance and high burn rates of AP-based composite propellants [62, 63]. At the same time, high pressure exponent and unstable combustion prevent their application in large rockets due to safety considerations [20]. The inclusion of Al powder and other additives increases the burn rate and also eliminates the combustion instability. [Pg.236]

Research. A significant impact on research at high pressure has come about with the use of gem quality diamonds as Bridgman-type anvils in a small compact high pressure device (40—42). With this type of apparatus, pressures greater than those at the center of the earth (360 GPa = 3.6 Mbars) have been reached, and phase transformations of many materials have been studied. Because of the x-ray transparency of diamond, it is possible to determine the structure of the phases under pressure. Because of the strenuous environment, crystals selected for this application have to be of very high quality. [Pg.559]

Mercury arcs are employed in these lamps because of the spectral distribution they emit, and because mercury vapor is relatively inert. It does not attack either the glass or the electrode materials (Kirk 1982). This contributes to the long lifetimes of mercury lamps. Low pressure mercury lamps are commonly called fluorescent lamps. High pressure mercury lamps are used in industrial environments and for street lighting and floodlighting.
