In an article dealing with applications of olefin CM to a series of commercial products [138], solvent-free CM between ( )-3-hexene (produced by homocoupling of 1-butene) and 11-eicosenyl acetate 303 (produced from jojoba oil) was used to produce acetate 304 (Scheme 59), which is - as a natural 82 18 (EIZ) mixture - the pheromone of omnivorous leafroller, and serves as an environment-friendly pest controlling agent. The CM reaction was performed without solvent at 5 °C with a 4 1 mixture of ( )-3-hexene and 303, in the presence of only 0.2 mol% catalyst C, and furnished after 20 h coupling product 304 ( Z=83 17) in 50% yield. [Pg.331]

Polysaccharides such as starch and cellulose have been used as reinforcing agents in natural rubber. Both solution blending and dry mixing methods have been employed for the development of biocomposites and the performance compared with the composites obtained using carbon black. Dry mixing method is more economically viable and environment friendly. [Pg.122]

The copolymers which were formed by glycerol and sebacic acid were first studied by Natta and coworkers to obtain environment-friendly plastics. In their work, the molar ratio of glycerol to sebacic acid was 2 3. However, the products obtained by them were highly cross-linked and nonelastomeric. [Pg.222]

Several environment-friendly surface preparation for the treatment of mbber soles with radiations have been recently studied. These treatments are clean (no chemicals or reactions by-products are produced) and fast, and furthermore online bonding at shoe factory can be produced, so the future trend in surface modification of substrates in shoe industry will be likely directed to the industrial application of those treatments. Corona discharge, low-pressure RF gas plasma, and ultraviolet (UV) treatments have been successfully used at laboratory scale to improve the adhesion of several sole materials in shoe industry. Recently, surface modification of SBR and TR by UV radiation has been industrially demonstrated in shoe industry... [Pg.769]

In order to support and meet this demand, an all-around development has taken place on the material front too, be it an elastomer new-generation nanofiller, surface-modified or plasma-treated filler reinforcing materials like aramid, polyethylene naphthenate (PEN), and carbonfiber nitrosoamine-free vulcanization and vulcanizing agents antioxidants and antiozonents series of post-vulcanization stabUizers environment-friendly process oil, etc. [Pg.920]

CB fly loss as occurs in dry blending techniques is avoided and thus this technique is environment friendly. [Pg.1030]

Polymer disposal in an inappropriate manner creates environmental problems such as dioxin formation, catastrophic fires, breeding of rats, and mosquitoes. Several methods have been explored to utilize plastics and mbber waste in an environment-friendly manner. Some of the recent advances in mbber recycling are reviewed in this chapter with special emphasis to waste mbber reutilization in plastics and mbbers. The utilization of waster mbber powder in polymer matrices provides an attractive strategy for polymer waste disposal. [Pg.1061]

When OCs were phased out, the less persistent insecticides that replaced them were thought to be more environment friendly. However, some of the insecticides that were used as replacements also presented problems because of very high acute toxicity. The insecticides to be discussed in this chapter illustrate well the ecotoxi-cological problems that can be associated with compounds that have low persistence but high neurotoxicity. [Pg.193]

The environmental fate and behavior of compounds depends on their physical, chemical, and biochemical properties. Individual OPs differ considerably from one another in their properties and, consequently, in their environmental behavior and the way they are used as pesticides. Pesticide chemists and formulators have been able to exploit the properties of individual OPs in order to achieve more effective and more environment-friendly pest control, for example, in the development of compounds like chlorfenviphos, which has enough stability and a sufficiently low vapor pressure to be effective as an insecticidal seed dressing, but, like other OPs, is readily biodegradable thus, it was introduced as a more environment-friendly alternative to persistent OCs as a seed dressing. [Pg.196]

The demand for environment-friendly fuels requires the removal of organosulfur compounds present in crade-oil fractions. SO2 or SO3 contribute to the formation of acid rain and have an effect on pollution control devices [9]. Very stringent environmental regulations will limit the sulfur levels in diesel fuels in EU to less than 10 ppm by the end of 2010 [10]. The conventional sulfur-compound... [Pg.145]

At present, photosynthetic organisms are not generally used as biocatalysts for bioconversion of organic compounds except for bioremediation of pollutants in the environment, although they are environment-friendly catalysts, and they may contain unusual type of enzymes to establish new reactions. Development of bioreactors specially developed for photosynthefic organism-catalyzed reaction as well as finding effective photosynthetic organisms as a biocatalyst are required in the future. [Pg.57]

The strategy for preparing gold catalysts for liquid-phase oxidation is based on environment friendly and cheap methodologies with the aim to produce 3-5 nm particles, well dispersed on carbon supports, to be applied also to large-scale preparations. [Pg.254]

An improved solidification (cementation) technology has been used by Dr. Lawrence K. Wang of the Lenox Institute of Water Technology, Massachusetts, USA, for successful solidification of mercury-containing batteries in concrete blocks. The concrete blocks, which are environment friendly, can then be properly buried in the government-approved hazardous waste landfill sites.3... [Pg.1231]

Chaliha S, Bhattacharyya KG (2008) Using Mn(II) - MCM41 as an environment - friendly catalyst to oxidize phenol, 2-chlorophenol and 2-nitrophenol in aqueous solution. Ind Eng Chem Res 47 1370-1379... [Pg.308]

In the past, product-related standards in the European waste law were rare. This changed with the triumphal success of everyday electronic gadgets and the associated increase in e-scrap. The EC Directive 2002/96/EC - better known as the WEEE directive - aimed to combat the increasing amount of e-waste from electrical and electronic devices [8]. Goal is the avoidance, reduction, and environment-friendly disposal of increasing amounts of electronic waste through extended producer responsibility. This goal has been hindered by a number of pollutants that are included in the devices (RISKCYCLE). [Pg.140]

Coal is one of the major fuels in Ukraine where its environmental impact is much higher than that of nuclear energy, provided that there are no accidents. Yet there is no alternative to coal, for natural gas can only cover the most urgent household and industrial needs, not to mention the country s indebtedness for its imports. The question of environment-friendly combustion of coal is therefore highly topical. [Pg.32]
