Actual emission data are available from many handbooks, government publications, and literature searches of appropriate research papers and journals. It is always wise to verify the data, if possible, as to the validity of the source and the reasonableness of the final number. Some emission factors, which have been in use for years, were only rough estimates proposed by someone years ago to establish the order of magnitude of the particular source. [Pg.94]

In the technical library the starting point of all searches is the file of index slips which the library has accumulated. This file includes references in periodicals, government publications, material put out by associations and societies, trade literature, books, literature searches previously made, and miscellaneous material. As in the case of patent searches, an earlier investigation brought up to date may take care of the request or some portion of it. Standard reference works in the field in question are then consulted. Abstract journals are covered next. This step in the search is of the greatest importance, as it serves as a key to the periodical literature. An abstract is not regarded as a substitute for the article abstracted in all but a brief preliminary examination the original reference is read if at all possible. [Pg.229]

In addition to the regular trades and press releases, the database includes content from local, national, and international newspapers, government publications, and market research studies. Users can search by SIC and NAICS codes, company name, trade name, or geographic location. It is updated daily. Retrospective coverage goes back to 1972. [Pg.160]

The FWS enforces federal wildlife laws, protects and manages migratory birds, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat, snch as wetlands, and helps foreign governments. For publications, search http //library.fws.gov/ (accessed March 23, 2011). [Pg.309]

Of the more recent works one of the most important is A Guide to the Literature of Chemistry by E. J. Crane, A. M. Patterson and E. B. Marr (Wiley, 1957). Its chapters deal with books, periodicals, patents, government publications, trade literature, other sources, indexes, libraries, and procedure in literature searches. There are also several valuable appendixes. It is a most comprehensive guide which shows how to use each form of the literature, analyses the various kinds of sources of information, and tells the reader how to keep up to date. It is useful as a reference tool and as a textbook, showing the correct way to use libraries and indexes in carrying out literature searches. [Pg.38]

Copies of patents are available from the US Patent Office and commercial search firms. Many government publications and publications on government-sponsored work are available from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) and the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC). [Pg.20]

The information in this book was obtained from every imaginable source within the environmental science and engineering profession. They include virtually every peer-reviewed journal in the field, every government-issued report, the proceedings of every related conference in the past two decades, as well as publications of commercial companies working in this field. Ultimately the providers of every technology were contacted personally for interviews involving their work. Only top-quality services and products survived the search for information and eventual publication in this handbook. [Pg.1]

New adverse environmental impacts will continue to be found, even with some of the substitutes. In some cases, biodegradable substitutes might be possible. The search for alternative pesticides or other products that have less adverse environmental impact has been rewarding to society and industry. Such efforts need to be continued and will be driven by the marketplace s responding to public and government interests. [Pg.33]

Comprehensive reviews of medical databases (105) and health and toxicological information systems (106), including search aids in each field, appeared in ARIST publications in 1983 and 1990. Toxicology information was reviewed in 1983 (103) and medical and health information in 1990 (100). Reviews of electronic government information (107) and engineering information systems (108) have also been published and provide an expansion of database knowledge for readers who require crossover information in these fields. [Pg.127]

At the end of the twentieth century, eminent critics of international affairs, in search of the new world order for the coming century, claimed that the Westphalian framework would be superseded by an international community of various actors, which undoubtedly include the citizens who are loosely referred to by Margaret Kosal in Chapter 6 as the public . They are people not directly involved in international affairs or, in this particular case, in chemical disarmament activity. However, because of the actions by these loose actors , the accountability of governance, as asserted by another scholar, would rest more with the bureau-... [Pg.181]

Literature searches are also available from OTS on a fee basis. These are performed to meet special needs which are not covered by a currently available OTS Selective Bibliography. Under this service OTS will compile lists of relevant publications in its collection rf government research reports, unclassified and declassified AEG reports, technical translations, and OTS files of government-owned patents. The fee for this service is 8 per hour, and the customer may limit the time to be spent on a search. Additional information on these searches may be obtained by writing to the Technical Information Division, OflBce of Technical Services, Washington 25, D.G. [Pg.181]
