Abstracting journals

There have been no further developments in this area, apart from the issue of the first indexes (to volume 71) of Chemical Abstracts, fully incorporating Registry Numbers. 

The 23rd lUPAC Conference in Boston, Massachussetts, during July 1971 contained a large section devoted to organometallic chemistry. The

The three most important abstracting journals for organic chemistry are ... 

The volumes of Advances in Chemistry Series will be numbered consecutively. It is expected that the Advances in Chemistry Series will be recognized as an integral part of the permanent literature, and will be covered by the abstract journals. 

The coverage attempted in this Handbook is wide, but is certainly incomplete because of the difficulties in retrieving relevant information from original literature when it does not appear in the indices of either primary or abstract journals. Details of such new material known to users of this Handbook and within the scope given in the Introduction will be welcomed for inclusion in supplementary or revised editions of this work. 

The journals include articles or reports on papers from others (notably French or German) Chem. Z. Blatt Chemisches Zentral-Blatt (abstract journal summarizing international publications)... 

Beilstein is the most comprehensive list of organic compounds. The main series, volumes 1-27, 30 and 31, part I, covers the literature up to 1910. The first supplement, volumes 1-27, and the subject and formulae indexes constituting volumes 28 and 29, survey the literature up to 1919. The second supplement, volumes 1-27, and the subject and formulae indexes constituting volumes 28 and 29, covers the period 1920-1929. For compounds not listed in Beilstein , i.e., for those which first appear in the literature after 1929, the indexes of the Abstract Journals Chemical Abstracts, ChemischesZentralblatt or British Chemical Abstracts (to 1953) should be consulted. The Collective Formula Index to Chemical Abstracts, 1920-1946, is extremely useful. For general reference work Heilbron will be found less cumbersome than Beilstein , although of necessity not so comprehensive.

A useful abstracts journal specifically devoted to organic synthesis is the Journal of Synthetic Methods. This developed as an expansion and adaptation of Theilheimer s Methods of Organic Chemistry (see Section A1.4.3 below). About 6000 reactions reported in the literature are included annually. Of these, about 3000 are presented as abstracts and the remainder, mainly modifications and improvements, are given as supplementary references.

That year, Pope accepted a post as an Abstractor and Editor of Abstract Journals for the Research Association of British Rubber Manufacturers, leaving them in 1938 to work with Kodak as Journal Abstractor and Indexer at their Research Laboratories in Harrow, joining her longtime friend, Hamer (see above). She took a position as Research Librarian at the Distillers Research Department, Epsom, in 1944 — the same year she married Johannus Martinus Hulsken, a Chief Officer in the Dutch Merchant Navy. The literature of cement chemistry is voluminous the abstracting journal. Cements Research Progress has latterly listed about one thousand new contributions annually. Inevitably, coverage in the present work has been selective. 1 have tried to strike a balance between classical and recent contributions, in order to produce a book that will serve both as an... 

During the year, an interesting proposal was made for the publication of a new type of abstract journal, in which each paper accepted would be published in a fixed format on a single sheet (4). The full version of the paper would be stored on microfilm, which would be available as necessary.
