PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

Using computer modeling, jointly with x-ray fiber diffraction data, the molecular architectures of two different gel-forming polysaccharides have been examined. Preliminary results indicate that the neutral and doubly branched capsular polysaccharide from Rhizobium trifolii can form a 2-fold single helix of pitch 1.96 nm or a half-staggered, 4-fold doublehelix of pitch 3.92 nm. The molecules are likely to be stabilized by main chain — side chain interactions. 

We have been able to distinguish two distinctive groups of pottery among the majolica sherds excavated from Spanish sites in the New World. These distinctions are based on the examination and analysis of the paste portions of the sherds and have involved the combined use of neutron activation analysis, x-ray diflFraction analysis, and petrographic examination. Preliminary investigations of the relationships of each of these two groups of sherds to sherds of known origin have also been undertaken. There is evidence to support a Spanish source for the sherds from sites in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela and a Mexican source for the sherds excavated in Mexico City. 

In the ADCA, y is again given by (4.58c). For the general case of polarizable-polar particles, the LIN approximation for e has not yet been quantitatively examined. Preliminary results of ours for the ADCA indicate that it is highly successful for nonpolar particles but rapidly becomes inaccurate as m is increased to values of interest for polar particles, yielding far too large an e.

Visual and Manual Tests. Synthetic fibers are generally mixed with other fibers to achieve a balance of properties. Acryhc staple may be blended with wool, cotton, polyester, rayon, and other synthetic fibers. Therefore, as a preliminary step, the yam or fabric must be separated into its constituent fibers. This immediately estabUshes whether the fiber is a continuous filament or staple product. Staple length, brightness, and breaking strength wet and dry are all usehil tests that can be done in a cursory examination. A more critical identification can be made by a set of simple manual procedures based on burning, staining, solubiUty, density deterrnination, and microscopical examination. 

For dust-control work, it is recommended that a preliminary quah-tative examination of the dust first be made without a detailed particle count. A visual estimate of particle-size distribution will often provide sufficient guidance for a preliminaiy assessment of reqmrements for collection eqmpment. 

This book is primarily directed at professional materials scientists and engineers, and they have no urgent need to see themselves defined. Indeed, it would be perfectly reasonable to say about materials science what Aaron Katchalsky used to say about his new discipline, biophysics Biophysics is like my wife. I know her, but I cannot define her (Markl 1998). Nevertheless, in this preliminary canter through the early history of MSE, it is instructive to examine briefly how various eminent practitioners have perceived their changing domain. 

Such data can provide a calibration curve and allow the constants (E) and F ) in equation (20) to be determined. The value of the molecular weight of an unknown solute can then be obtained from its (H) value by reading the value directly from the curve or by calculation using the predetermined constants (E) and (F ) in equation (20). It should be pointed out that an error of up to 30% may not appear to be very useful but, in fact, such precision can be extremely valuable in the preliminary examination of many biochemical substances where only very small quantities of material are available. It is also an ideal method for molecular weight determination before more accurate, labor-intensive and time-consuming methods are considered. 

Although still preliminary, the study that provides the most detailed test of the theory for the electronic properties of the ID carbon nanotubes, thus far, is the combined STM/STS study by Oik and Heremans[13]. In this STM/STS study, more than nine individual multilayer tubules with diameters ranging from 1.7 to 9.5 nm were examined. The 7-Fplots provide evidence for both metallic and semiconducting tubules[13,14]. Plots of dl/dV indicate maxima in the ID density of states, suggestive of predicted singularities in the ID density of states for carbon nanotubes. This STM/ STS study further shows that the energy gap for the semiconducting tubules is proportional to the inverse tubule diameter l/<7, and is independent of the tubule chirality. 

Before work aetivity begins, all employees required to partieipate in a medieal surveillanee program for hazardous waste aetivities should undergo a baseline medieal examination (a physieal exam). In Russia, E. equisetina and E. intermedia are available and are considered to be worth exploitation. In Italy various local species have been found to contain mainly i -ephedrine and that in small amount, but better results are recorded for two species already referred to and which are available in Sardinia, viz. E. vulgaris Rich and E. nebrodensis. ... 

A preliminary report on rauwolscine by Chakravarti indicates that it is a cardiovascular depressant, shows hypotensive action and a relatively high toxicity. Koepfli s rauwolfine produces a fall in blood pressure, and stimulation of respiration in frogs it has a curare-like action. The rauwolfine of van Itallie and Steenhauer has been examined by Hartog and by de Boer, especially in regard to its cardiac action. According to Raymond-Hamet, it reverses the action of adrenaline.

It will be intriguing to theoretically examine the possibility of superconductivity in CNT prior to the actual experimental assessment. A preliminary estimation of superconducting transition temperature (T ) for metallic CNT has been performed considering the electron-phonon coupling within the framework of the BCS theory [31]. It is important to note that there can generally exist the competition between Peierls- and superconductivity (BCS-type) transitions in lowdimensional materials. However, as has been described in Sec. 2.3, the Peierls transition can probably be suppressed in the metallic tube (a, a) due to small Fermi integrals as a whole [20].
