A number of government publications on infrared spectroscopy are available, and since it is not practical to list all of them a few will be selected to indicate the general areas and laboratories involved. All those listed may be purchased from the United States Department of Commerce, Office of Technical Services. [Pg.346]

Actual emission data are available from many handbooks, government publications, and literature searches of appropriate research papers and journals. It is always wise to verify the data, if possible, as to the validity of the source and the reasonableness of the final number. Some emission factors, which have been in use for years, were only rough estimates proposed by someone years ago to establish the order of magnitude of the particular source. [Pg.94]

It is hoped that the improvements will help to achieve die objectives for which die text was originally conceived, i.e. to summarize in relatively basic terms die hazards associated with chemicals and how the ensuing risks can be controlled, and to provide sufficient detailed information to supplement that obtainable from suppliers, government publications, trade associations, and computerized data banks where recourse to specialized textbooks may be premature, difficult or unnecessary. [Pg.617]

Equation 1.4-7 showed that as long as consequences are small enough, that effects are lineai, i.e., not so catastrophic as to affect the perpetuation of civilization, the number of injuries or fatalities in either case are the same whether or not there are many small accidents or a few large accidents. But the public, either because of information sources or for more fundamental reasons does not see it this way. Since the public affects government, public perception is a concern. [Pg.12]

Transportation accounts for about one-fourth of the primary energy consumption in the United States. And unlike other sectors of the economy that can easily switch to cleaner natural gas or electricity, automobiles, trucks, nonroad vehicles, and buses are powered by internal-combustion engines burning petroleum products that produce carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. Efforts are under way to accelerate the introduction of electric, fuel-cell, and hybrid (electric and fuel) vehicles to replace sonic of these vehicles in both the retail marketplace and in commercial, government, public transit, and private fleets. These vehicles dramatically reduce harmful pollutants and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 50 percent or more compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. [Pg.479]

At this point in her life, Carson was fortunate enough to find a more lucrative position, as a science writer at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. Her job there was to prepare radio scripts and to edit a variety of government publications dealing with fisheries. She was also able to do some freelance writing on the side and, in 1937, published her first major article, "Undersea," in the Atlantic Monthly magazine. [Pg.10]
