Supercomputers are found in many government research laboratories, intelligence agencies, universities, and a small number of industrial companies. In the United States, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has provided supercomputers to several prominent universities for both academic and industrial users. These centers provide state-of-the-art, supercomputer-tuned appHcations for a wide variety of disciplines, together with staffs who are very knowledgeable in optimization for supercomputer performance. [Pg.88]

Investigations conducted at the Canadian Government Research Laboratories in Ottawa on the chemical structures of Neisseria meni-gitidis antigens have mainly been based on the interpretation of 13C-n.m.r. spectra. The polysaccharides of serogroups A, B, C, W135, X, Y,165 29e,166 and BO167 were characterized as complex polysaccharides,... [Pg.81]

Drug discovery and development is mainly carried out by pharmaceutical companies, universities, and government research agencies, although there are increasing activities in the start-up and smaller companies that specialize in particular fields of research. A substantial number of the research findings and... [Pg.5]

The first meeting was with two or three chemists in dark suits and ties who were introduced to me and a half dozen other research chemists as being government researchers in the area of potentially interesting synthetic organic chemicals. We were not told from which laboratory they came and the only clues to their areas of interest were two synthetic reaction sequences which had been drawn on the conference room blackboard. The man with the chalk told us that these two pictures had been worked out successfully, and their question was could any of us propose a last step which might link them together. The bottom compounds in the two schemes were followed by arrows which pointed to an empty area at the bottom of the blackboard. 1 asked them why not draw in the structure of the desired product and they said that they were not at liberty to do so. [Pg.380]

Enzymes in Biomass Conversion features chapters written by many of the leading international experts from universities, government research laboratories, and enzyme-producing industries. The chapters cover the enzymes of current potential importance to large-scale commercial bioconversion processes. They describe our state of knowledge about enzymes in specific applications, preferred methods for enzyme production, characteristics of the individual enzymes, and recommendations for future research. [Pg.527]

Much, though not all, of the scientific knowledge produced around the globe has traditionally been handled in this fashion. One thinks here of the scientific research performed by government research facilities or of academic research funded either by government or by private donors who wish the product of that research to be shared, free of charges as widely as possible, on a global basis. One occasionally sees proposals to apply this approach also to pharmaceutical research. Various models could be used to that end. [Pg.27]

In the United States, the National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) was created in 1998 as one of the many research institutes and centers within the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH). This government research center collaborates with academic medical centers to evaluate specific nontraditional approaches to health and healing by conducting clinical trials and other scientific studies, as is done for drugs. [Pg.80]

A rich library of tracers exists for the dopamine Systran and perhaps also the serotonin system however, little or nothing currently exists for the assessment of many other neurotransmitter systems in the brain, some of whose receptors have been identified only recently. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are major sources not only of new compounds that target these sites as candidate therapeutics but also of compounds that may serve as radiotracers to evaluate these sites and the effects of disease and treatment. The incentive and raw materials for continued development of functional imaging of the human bram will depend on the establishment of sustained collaborations between academic and government research centers and the pharmaceutical industry. [Pg.226]

FI Test (Figure of Insensitiveness Test)(Brit). An Impact Sensitiveness Test devised about 1908 by Dr G. Rotter at the British Government Research Establishment, Woolwich Arsenal. Important changes were introduced in the method in 1966 by Mortlock and Wilby (Ref 4). The original method and the modifications are described... [Pg.421]

New scientific knowledge, in medicine, chemistry, molecular biology, and other fields important to pharmaceutical research, is not the product of massive private investment. Instead it arises from the "work of creative academic or government researchers" that can manipulate the science, and have the intellectual curiosity and dedication to expand and falsify knowledge hypotheses (Love 2004). [Pg.187]

Additional data for a particular type of fuel injection might be discovered by means of comprehensive bibliographies available (15, 22, 35, 84)- Most current work is eventually noted in one or more of the following publications Aeronautical Engineering Review, Aircraft Engineering, Jet Propulsion, NACA Research Abstracts (unclassified and confidential), Title Announcement Bulletins of the Armed Services Technical Information Agency (unclassified and confidential), U. S. Government Research Reports. [Pg.113]

In lute 1941 Australian government researchers announced the development of a remote-controlled vehicle that can scout ahead of a rescue crew to locale missing and injured miners. Three stereo-video cameras permit the vehicle to operate in murky areas of a mine. The vehicle also includes gas analysis instrumentation. A fiber-optic cable, wound on a large drum, permits surface operators to convey instructions to the vehicle and to receive the results of gas analysis data and images of what the vehicle "sees. The vehicle is named after a burrowing marsupial, Numbat. [Pg.400]
