Comprehensive reviews of medical databases (105) and health and toxicological information systems (106), including search aids in each field, appeared in ARIST pubHcations in 1983 and 1990. Toxicology information was reviewed in 1983 (103) and medical and health information in 1990 (100). Reviews of electronic government information (107) and engineering information systems (108) have also been pubHshed and provide an expansion of database knowledge for readers who require crossover information in these fields. 

Spectral subtraction and spectral search aid the identification of evolved gases, which are often a mixture of products. Nevertheless, for unambiguous identification of unknown volatiles more powerful methods are required. Jansen and co-workers [86] have incorporated a parallel mass spectrometer onto the FTIR stage of a thermogravimetry-FTIR (TG-FTIR). The sample is thermally decomposed by TGA and the products collected in a Tenax (absorbent charcoal) trap. After desorption, the products are separated by a GC and the sample split, with 99% going to the IR spectrometer and 1% to the mass spectrometer.

Template searches in THREADER were performed with the primary sequence and the primary sequence with the predicted secondary structure as determined by PSI-PRED. The results of a THREADER template search aided by the predicted secondary structure information can then be analyzed with the Threading Expert. The top five templates based on Z-Score (Primary and Secondary) and overall Score (Threading Expert) are presented. The original THREADER library was used. 

To supplement its search methods, EMIC has access to a computer Name Match program which is located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory s Computing Center. This program makes it possible to locate synonyms of chemical compounds so they may be used as search aids. This capability lends an important dimension to our ability to retrieve mutagenic data.
