Glycol Ethers. Glycol ethers are produced by reaction of propylene oxide with various alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, butanol, and phenol. The products are the mono-, di-, and tripropylene glycol ethers. These products are used in protective coatings, inks, textile dyeing, cleaners, antiicing additives for jet fuel, and as chemical intermediates (276). [Pg.143]

Butyl glycol ethers, the largest volume derivatives of -butyl alcohol used ia solvent appHcations (10), are obtained from the reaction of 1-butanol with ethylene oxide. The most important of these derivatives, 2-butoxyethanol, is used principally ia vinyl and acryHc paints as well as ia lacquers and varnishes. It is also employed ia aqueous cleaners to solubilize organic surfactants. 2-Butoxyethanol [111-76-2] has achieved some growth at the expense of the lower alkoxyethanols (ie, methoxy and ethoxyethanol) because of 2-butoxyethanol s lower toxicity. [Pg.358]

On prolonged storage, glycol ethers have been shown to form peroxy compounds which can adversely affect the dyes normally used in glass cleaners. Morpholine, Ammonia, or other volatile amines may be used in place of the Monoethanolamine. [Pg.57]

Most paints used in the household today are water-based products. Significant quantities of paints, primers, and brush cleaners are washed down the drain during cleanup following painting. U.S. Patent 5,798,324 discloses a glass cleaner containing a synthetic polymer thickener in the presence of certain glycol ethers, nonionic surfactants, and linear alcohols that increases viscosity synergistically. Cited compositions exhibit optimal vertical cling and ease of use. [Pg.87]

It can be seen from the structure of the glycol ethers (Figure 13.4) that if the alkyl chain is extended sufficiently then it begins to approximate the structure of simple nonionic surfactants, those of the ethoxylated alcohol family. This has led some chemical producers in recent times to introduce compounds meant to be hybrid chemicals with the properties of both solvent and surfactant.
