Over 68 aerosol products containing isopropyl alcohol solvent have been reported (145). Aerosol formulations include hair sprays (146), floor detergents (147), shoe poHshes (148), insecticides (149,150), bum ointments (151), window cleaners, waxes and poHshes, paints, automotive products (eg, windshield deicer), insect repellents, flea and tick spray, air refreshers, disinfectants, veterinary wound and pinkeye spray, first-aid spray, foot fungicide, and fabric-wrinMe remover (152) (see Aerosols). 

Liquid household bleach is generally a 5% solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Ammonia cleansers—including general household cleansers, wax removers, glass and window cleaners, and oven cleaners — are aqueous solutions of 5-10% ammonia, NH3. Mixing bleach with cleansers containing ammonia leads to the formation of a family of potentially toxic compounds known as chloramines. These toxic gases have acrid fumes that can bum mucous membranes. Scented bleaches can mask one s natural ability to detect these harmful fumes. 

PVC is used pure or as a blend to make a wide variety of products including PVC pipes, food packaging film, and containers for window cleaners, edible oils, and solid detergents. It accounts for only 5% of the container market.

Household ammonia, liquid window cleaners, liquid all-purpose cleaners and various other household cleaning products constitute this small market for ammonia. Ammonia is also used in the manufacture of ammonium salts of alcohol, ether and sulfates. These compounds are widely used as surfactants in detergents that are in liquid dishwashing formulations57. 

The bases of most functional products possess more-or-less undesirable odor qualities. In creams, soaps, and detergent-based products, it is the greasy or waxy note of fatty acids and their derivatives in cold-wave lotions, depilatories, and insecticides, the pungent smell of active agents in window cleaners and nail polish removers, the sweet "chemical" odor of organic solvents. 

In window cleaners traditionally based on dilute ammonia, removing the ammonia sting does not necessarily lead to improved consumer acceptance. Consumers in some markets have come to expect the sting and regard it as a signal of product performance. On the other hand, cases have also occurred where off-odors that appeared insignificant to the experts caused a considerable drop in consumer acceptance. 

Already the VOC concern is prompting some manufacturers of household products such as air fresheners and window cleaners to change their formulations, thereby creating new challenges with respect to perfume solubility. It is impossible to estimate at this time to what extent in the future this concern will confront the perfumer with additional questions and challenges at the international level.

A 23-year-old woman weighing 64 kg was admitted to the hospital approximately 1 hour after ingesting 500 mL window-cleaner containing 2-butoxyethanol (391-469 mg/kg) and ethanol (Gijsenbergh et al. 1989). The half-lives of ethanol (from the cleaning fluid) and 2-butoxyethanol in the blood were 20 and 210 minutes, respectively. The half-life of 2-butoxyethanol was longer than expected, perhaps because of saturation of metabolism and competitive inhibition by ethanol. 2-Butoxyacetic acid was highest in the dialysis fluid (738 mg/L) at the initiation of dialysis and decreased thereafter. A concomitant increase in 2-butoxyacetic acid in the urine was seen with the initiation of dialysis, and concentrations reached a peak of approximately 8 g/g creatinine 1.3 hours after the start of dialysis. The half-life of free 2-butoxyacetic acid in the urine after the start of dialysis was 5.3 hours.
