Brake fluid

Dihydroxybutane. -butylene glycol, CH3CH(0H)CH2CH20H, b.p. 204°C. Manufactured by reduction of aldol or by the action of yeast on aldol. Used to prepare butadiene. Used in brake fluids, in gelling agents and as an intermediate in plasticizers.

Lubricants, Fuels, and Petroleum. The adipate and azelate diesters of through alcohols, as weU as those of tridecyl alcohol, are used as synthetic lubricants, hydrauHc fluids, and brake fluids. Phosphate esters are utilized as industrial and aviation functional fluids and to a smaH extent as additives in other lubricants. A number of alcohols, particularly the Cg materials, are employed to produce zinc dialkyldithiophosphates as lubricant antiwear additives. A smaH amount is used to make viscosity index improvers for lubricating oils. 2-Ethylhexyl nitrate [24247-96-7] serves as a cetane improver for diesel fuels and hexanol is used as an additive to fuel oil or other fuels (57). Various enhanced oil recovery processes utilize formulations containing hexanol or heptanol to displace oil from underground reservoirs (58) the alcohols and derivatives are also used as defoamers in oil production. 

In addition to DAA s use in the production of MIBK, DAA also finds use as a specialty reaction intermediate. Hydrogenation of DAA at 100°C and 30 MPa (83) yields hexylene glycol ( 1.43/kg, October 1994), widely used in castor oil-based hydrauhc brake fluids and as a solvent. Reaction of /)-phenetidine [156-43-4] with DAA synthesizes Monsanto s Santoquin (ethoxyquin) [91-53-2] (149), an antioxidant used in animal feeds and also as a mbber additive. Diacetone alcohol (acetone-free) was available at 1.32/kg as of October 1994.

Dipropylene glycol is produced in the manufacture of propylene glycol and finds utiUty as an indirect food additive, in brake-fluid formulations, cutting oils, soaps, and solvents. Tripropylene glycol also finds use as a solvent, as textile soaps, and as lubricants (273). 

Glycol Ethers. These are made by reaction of ethylene oxide with various alcohols. They are used for solvents, detergents, brake fluids, and jet fuel deicing. 

Higher alcohols have more than three carbon atoms. Examples are the dihydric alcohol, ethylene glycol used for antifreeze, brake fluids and as derivatives in resins, paints " " osives, and polyester fibers. Reactions with propylene make propylene glycol, a moistening ag foods and tobacco.

The undesirable properties of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer, i.e., softening at high temperatures and flow under pressure, which limit their use at elevated temperamres have been reduced by cross-linking with EB radiation. The cross-linked polyurethane shows good mechanical properties and also displays good resistance to aggressive chemicals, e.g., brake fluid [432 35]. 

A few years ago, a customer filed suit against a nationally known manufacturer of automotive brake fluid for supplying faulty merchandise. When the company s control chemist went before the jury with his detailed quality control records, he was able to prove that the allegedly faulty batch made two years earlier met all the requirements established for this product. The plaintiff lost his case.

Under-the-hood and other mechanical parts subjected to a harsh environment characterized by high temperatures, aggressive fluids (fuel, oils, coolant fluids, brake fluids, ozone. ..). On the other hand, there is no exposure to UV or light. 

At room or moderate temperature, LCPs generally resist acids at low concentrations, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, greases, oils, pure gasoline, acetone, most chlorinated hydrocarbons, and most brake fluids.
