Table 1.2, based on Modern Plastics sources, provides USA consumption figures (based on sales data) for the main groups of plastics materials. The figures probably underestimate the global importance of the major tonnage thermoplastics since these are also manufactured in quantity in developing countries and OPEC countries. [Pg.11]

The USA figures are based on estimates published in Modern Plastics, apart from those for 1967, which are from US government sources. The global figures are from various sources, with the 1992 figure being based on RAPRA statistics.)... A crude approximation to computer-based systems can be achieved by considering tables of properties of plastics materials such as those published annually in the Modern Plastics Encyclopaedia. Since the tables are to be marked, the following exercise should be carried out on photocopies ... [Pg.895]

Once again I should acknowledge that I have drawn heavily from the journals European Plastics News, Kunstojfe, Modern Plastics International and Plastics and Rubber Weekly for data on production and consumption statistics. [Pg.931]

Acetylene and ethylene compete as a chemical raw material. Ethylene is generally more economical, resulting in declining use of acetylene as a raw material. Calcium carbide, a raw material for acetylene has other uses. Treated with nitrogen, it gives calcium cyanamide, valuable as a fertilizer and weed killer, and a raw material for the production of melamine, used ir ng some modern plastics. [Pg.270]

The early development of modern plastic materials (over a century) can be related to the electrical industry. The electronic and electrical industry continues to be not only one of the major areas for plastic applications, they are a necessity in many applications worldwide (2,190). The main reasons is that plastic designed products are generally basically inexpensive, easily shaped, fast production dielectric materials with variable but controllable electrical properties, and jn most cases the plastics are used because they are good insulators (Chapter 5, ELECTRICAL PROPERTY). [Pg.222]

Information about the market introduction of new additives is easily accessible by means of various annual reports in Plastics Engineering (e.g. refs [75,76]), Modern Plastics International [77], Plastics Additives and Compounding (e.g. ref. [78]) or otherwise (Additives for Polymers, etc.), as well as regular conferences such as AddCon, AddPlast and SPE meetings. For business opportunities for 2002-2006, see ref. [79]. [Pg.723]

The electrolyte was a solution of ammonium chloride that bathed the electrodes. Like Plante s electrochemistry of the lead-acid battery, Leclanche s electrochemistry survives until now in the form of zinc-carbon dry cells and the use of gelled electrolyte.12 In their original wet form, the Leclanche electrochemistry was neither portable nor practicable to the extent that several modifications were needed to make it practicable. This was achieved by an innovation made by J. A. Thiebaut in 1881, who through encapsulating both zinc cathode and electrolyte in a sealed cup avoided the leakage of the liquid electrolyte. Modern plastics, however, have made Leclanche s chemistry not only usable but also invaluable in some applications. For example, Polaroid s Polar Pulse disposable batteries used in instant film packs use Leclanche chemistry, albeit in a plastic sandwich instead of soup bowls.1... [Pg.1305]
