Water filtering

A powerful tool now employed is that of diode array detection (DAD). This function allows peaks detected by UV to be scanned, and provides a spectral profile for each suspected microcystin. Microcystins have characteristic absorption profiles in the wavelength range 200-300 nm, and these can be used as an indication of identity without the concomitant use of purified microcystin standards for all variants. A HPLC-DAD analytical method has also been devised for measurement of intracellular and extracellular microcystins in water samples containing cyanobacteria. This method involves filtration of the cyanobacteria from the water sample. The cyanobacterial cells present on the filter are extracted with methanol and analysed by HPLC. The filtered water is subjected to solid-phase clean-up using C g cartridges, before elution with methanol and then HPLC analysis. [Pg.118]

Recently in some types of refuelling stations, corrosion-resistant materials have been used between the filter-water separator and the outlet pipeline and valves, usually stainless steel, rarely aluminum. If these are buried, they must have good insulating coating and be electrically separated from other tank installations by insulating couplings. [Pg.291]

Cleanliness is a measure of the water and sediment and the partieulate eontent. Water and sediment are found primarily in liquid fuels, while partieulates are found in gaseous fuels. Partieulates and sediments eause elogging of fuel filters. Water leads to oxidation in the fuel system and poor eombustion. A fuel ean be eleaned by filtration. [Pg.441]

Another option is to use open filters, which are generally constructed in concrete. They are normally rectangular in configuration. The filter mass is posed on a filter bottom, provided with its own drainage system, including bores that are needed for the flow of filtered water as well as for countercurrent washing with water or air. [Pg.257]

Commercial grades of PVP, K-15, K-30, K-90, and K-120 and the quaternized copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone and dimthylaminoethylmethacrylate (poly-VP/ DMAEMA) made by International Specialty Products (ISP) were used in this study. PEO standard calibration kits were purchased from Polymer Laboratories Ltd. (PL), American Polymer Standards Corporation (APSC), Polymer Standards Service (PSS), and Tosoh Corporation (TSK). In addition, two narrow NIST standards, 1923 and 1924, were used to evaluate commercial PEO standards. Deionized, filtered water, and high-performance liquid chromatography grade methanol purchased from Aldrich or Fischer Scientific were used in this study. Lithium nitrate (LiN03) from Aldrich was the salt added to the mobile phases to control for polyelectrolyte effects. [Pg.501]

B.5 parts of 1 -azaphenothiazine carboxylic acid chloride and 14 parts of piperidino-ethoxy-ethanol were introduced into 100 parts of chlorobenzene and the mixture boiled under reflux for 5 minutes. After cooling off the precipitated hydrochloride salt of piperidino-ethoxy-ethanol was filtered off on a suction filter. Water was added to the filtrate and the pH thereof adjusted to 5 to 6 with dilute HCI. The aqueous phase was then removed, a caustic soda solution added thereto and then extracted with ether. The ethyl extract waswashed with water, then dried with potash and the ether distilled off. 9.4 parts of the piperidino-ethoxy-ethyi ester of 1 -azaphenothiazine carboxylic acid were obtained. This product was dissolved in 20 parts of isopropanol and the solution neutralized with isopropanolic HCI. The monohydrochloride which precipitated out after recrystallization from isopropanol had a melting point of 160°Cto 161°C. [Pg.1240]

All diesel fuels tend to contain trace water, expressed in parts per million (ppm). With the veiy high fuel injection pressures now used in electronically controlled diesel engine, fuel-filter/water separators are widely used, since water allowed to circulate freely through the injection system can result in seizure of components and erosion of injector orifice holes, and in extreme cases the high compressibility factor of water can blow the tip off of the fuel injector. [Pg.341]

Flow rates are similar to that for sand filters, but higher quality filtered water is generally obtained. [Pg.323]

Air scouring is often used with larger filters to improve the cleaning efficiency. The wash cycle is normally a reduced flow backwash in conjunction with air scouring, at the rate of 2 cu ft air/sq ft bed surface area/min, followed by a full-flow rinse with filtered water to resettle the bed. [Pg.323]

Several studies have examined the partitioning of U on particles and colloids. Results from detailed sampling and particle separation in the Amazon estuary shows that most of the uranium at the Amazon River mouth is associated with particles (>0.4 im) and that >90% of the uranium in filtered water (<0.4 im) is transported in a colloidal phases (from a nominal molecular weight of 10 000 MW up to 0.4 im) (Swarzenski et al. 1995 Moore et al. 1996). Mixing diagrams for uranium in different size fractions in the Amazon estuary reveal that uranium in all size fractions clearly display both removal and substantial input during mixing. [Pg.587]

Data plotted against conductivity (although the salinity scale is not defined below 2, a tentative scale is indicated). The lines represent the best fit for each fraction in the estuary. The data from the Kalix river mouth represent the river water component, which show <10% aimual variation in concentration. The analytical errors are smaller than the symbols. The difference between the concentration in the ultra-filtered water and the concentration inside the ultrafiltration cell is therefore a measure of the bound concentration. Griffin and Chian7-7-, Hassett 7-, and Diachenko have used volatilization measurements to determine the extent of binding of pesticides and pollutants to dissolved humic materials. In these experiments either the rate of gas stripping of a compound or its equilibrium vapor pressure is measured in the presence and absence of humic materials. The results obtained can be manipulated in such a way to determine the percentage of the pollutant bound. [Pg.218]

Muratic acid is powerful. Thick gloves were worn along with eye protection. Using a stainless steel teaspoon, about 1-5ml (1 teaspoon) of muratic acid was poured into a pickle jar that contained roughly 3/4 filtered water (15 ounces or about 500ml.) The pickle jar was previously washed twice in a dishwasher in an attempt to ensure sterility. Under the lid of the pickle jar the manufacturer had painted on a thin ring of some type of latex or rubber to help seal the jar. The mixture of water and acid do not seem to affect the ring (it doesn t dissolve or melt the latex in any way) so the jar and its lid were used. [Pg.23]

Water reabsorption. Water is reabsorbed passively by way of osmosis from many regions of the tubule. As with sodium and chloride, 65% of the filtered water is reabsorbed from the proximal tubule. An additional 15% of the filtered water is reabsorbed from the descending limb of the Loop of Henle. This reabsorption occurs regardless of the water content of the body. The water enters the tubular epithelial cells through water channels, also referred to as aquaporins. These channels are always open in the early regions of the tubule. [Pg.320]

In order to make adjustments in the water load, the reabsorption of the remaining 20% of the filtered water from the distal tubule and the collecting duct is physiologically controlled by antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also referred to as vasopressin. Antidiuretic hormone, synthesized in the hypothalamus and released from the neurohypophysis of the pituitary gland, promotes the... [Pg.320]
